The cooking modes are handy, and work well. I did one frozen pizza and it came out perfect. Toast is good too but it is not as quick as our Smeg upright toaster (also five stars). The only issue I have is the lower knob rubs in one position when rotated through its entire range of motion. I'd place some high-temperature grease in there, but it doesn't appear to want to come off, and I'm not forcing it. The tolerance is just a tad off, and probably not indicative of every unit. It does not affect the operation at all, just a minor thing.
The sides of the unit do not get very warm at all, which is good if you have other appliances nearby. However, the top does get very hot when getting up into the 400 degrees F range. The top does afford a lot of storage space for the included pan or a pizza stone. To avoid a great deal of heat transfer if you do like to stack stuff there (and to avoid potential scratches to the metal surface), we placed a Kona or Grillaholics Grill Mat on top. This works great and I highly recommend one.
We mainly purchased this just to upgrade our old Black and Decker toaster oven, but the KitchenAid is SO much more! I can see how the use of our main oven will drop significantly (already has). We don't use it for toast very often as we have the Smeg, but this unit can handle anything you can fit in it. And it does pizza stone pizza better than our conventional oven!
Well, after about six months of almost daily use, we started having a recurring issue. It really did this right out of the box: the pre-heat continuously loops and/or resets, and never comes up to cook mode. Well, it does actually come to the proper temperature, but you'd never know it. It seemed to happen seldom but randomly from day one. So much so, we thought it was user error. But yesterday, while in pizza mode, it reset three times. It will preheat for about ten minutes or longer (too long) then go back to the beginning. A loop.
I contacted Kitchen-Aid via phone support (!) and within five minutes I had a no-hassle replacement model on the way! All I have to do is return the original in the same container, prepaid label and all. I was very pleased because (this fault notwithstanding) we love this convection oven. Their customer service is second to none. I researched this issue here in reviews and found a handful of folks who'd had a similar pre-heat issue. But it must be underreported or a low percentage. At any rate, a heads up! Still keeping it at five stars due to the excellent customer service.
Hmmm. Was preheating the oven today, and the same thing happened. It preheats for EVER, then shuts off. Has happened at least twice with the new unit. It seems random, and slightly changing the temperature and preheat works fine. Does not happen often enough to really allow me to pin down what setting or temperature it happens at, or if it does under all preheating circumstances (not all, but at various settings that is). So, to reiterate, the second one we got is starting to do the same thing. Never comes out of preheating and then turns itself off. I called KitchenAid and they once again offered to send us a new unit. Unfortunately, they sent the wrong model! So I had to send it back (prepaid of course) and then I have to call back after they get confirmation from FedEx it's coming back to them. Then they will (hopefully) send out the correct model. Both times this has happened, KitchenAid seemed completely unaware of the issues as if I was the only person to experience it. Still, five stars because overall we love this thing, use it daily, and their customer service is great.
Third replacement unit continues to struggle with preheating. Pizza mode seems most problematic. Just did a run of 450F for 13min. It shows preheat for about 15 minutes, then the whole unit shuts off. Switch to BAKE, same temp and time, things are fine. It just does not consistently preheat. Pretty much done with this unit. Dropping two stars. Almost feeling bad about contacting them for a new unit that does the same thing as the previous two!
Well, the third unit has started to fail more often. We started noting that in bake and pizza mode, it would preheat forever, as above, and then just shut off. Curiously, if you pick 445F instead of 450F, it works. It is as if the oven does not like x50F on any setting! I called Kitchenaid (it is now out of warranty) and they elected to send me a new one! Great customer service. Even though, post return gibberish, the person at customer service repeatedly stated we were using the oven incorrectly. "You have to press the start button again after it preheats, otherwise the oven will shot off". Completely missing the point I repeatedly told him we'd sit there and watch the unit never finish preheating, but just shut down. They sent me a link to post a video of the problem, and before I send the unit back, I'm going to try and get video of this bizarre random event. Still, we use this oven nearly 95% of the time for cooking and still highly recommend it, given their excellent service even out of warranty. Just make sure you register the serial number online so they have their records. That helped me a lot. Up one star.
I mostly use this oven for toast, and it works great. Yes, it takes about 4 minutes to toast 2 pieces of bread, but that is the same as my old Black & Decker toaster oven. I know, because the timer on the old oven was broken (would not turn off by itself) and I would make toast using another timer set for 4 minutes.
I’ve also made frozen pizza, baked sweet potatoes, and re heated tarts. All worked well. The convection feature helps to cook things faster when you’re hungry for dinner!
I have no problem with the preheating function. Yes, you do have to press “start” to begin baking after the oven has finished pre heating (it beeps), but that’s not a big deal.
This oven takes up more space than my very old toaster oven, but it has useful features and I like the design (especially the blue color). I don’t find that the exterior gets dangerously hot, but I do keep it the recommended 4” away from cabinets and make sure the power cord in back is not touching the oven wall.
I’m very happy to have found this at a good price on Amazon. The delivery did take quite a while (around 10 days) so I was really missing my toast during that time!
