It Was Great! Until it Wasn’t...

I bought this device back in the beginning of May. I am in the interlock program (happy to say I’m almost off in a month), and this thing really helped me to know if I was able to drive in the morning. I bought this one, and another BACTrack device (S80). The S80 always was lower than this one, so I stuck to this to really give me the piece of mind that I had nothing in my system. It is also more compact. When I would blow a .00, it would tell me almost instantly. I’m up to about 150 blows (probably give more than take) by August and no matter how long it’s been since my last drink, even when I know I’m fine, it “lags”, so to speak. I woke up around 12AM one night/morning and decided to blow to see if I could drive that latter morning. I was feeling fine, drank around 6 but not much after that. It told me I was at a .0009. Okay, cool. I’ll be fine by morning. Woke up around 6:30(AM), blew into it again (once again for the piece of mind) and it said I was at a .0008.... now usually, it takes about 15-20 minutes for that little amount to get out of your system. It really took six hours?!? Highly doubtful. Then I drank a bunch one night (not proud of it but for the sake of the review, I didn’t stop around 2). I probably had a good 2 bottles of wine. Okay, I knew I wasn’t going to be good all day. But I didn’t feel as crappy as I normally would. I didn’t blow until about 5PM. It said I was at a .067... I just said “damn... I’m still high up there”. I tested it with the S80 and it said I was at a .02.... I don’t really know which one was more accurate, I still wasn’t feeling my best, but it’s just been off to me. It was doing GREAT in the beginning, but it seems like it’s falling. And with only 150 (give more than take, again) in three months, when they claim to have it last for THOUSANDS of uses, and one year of accuracy, it seems a bit bogus. I really did have every trust in this thing at first. I don’t know if it was because I passed it around to my blacked out friends too much or whatever, but it’s really disappointing that it doesn’t seem NEARLY as accurate as it once was. I mean it would know there was barely any alcohol in my system, I would be rushing to a party, and it would “lag” but still tell me that I was .00... then I would go to my interlock and it would do the same exact thing! It was scary accurate, to be honest. If you want this product, it is worth the buy. It just doesn’t last as long as everyone seems to say it does. So either keep it to yourself and use it wisely, or be ready to spend a LOT of money buying this thing a few times a year. I seriously want to continue using this product, but it is also very vague on how to get it recalibrated (I’ve just seen people talk about it in the questionnaire). And I saw someone saying basically that you have to pay to get it recalibrated.... sorry, but how much money I spend on this thing, I should at least get the first couple free. Especially when it was only good for almost 200 uses when it claims to be thousands.

When I was researching this product I noticed several reviews saying right out of the box they kept getting the FLO error message. This concerned me, but due to the high amount of positive reviews I purchased the BACtrack Trace. The first few times I used it I also got the dreaded FLO error. In my case it was user error. After you press the Start button it will start a 11 second countdown. You need to wait until it hits "0" and the screen will display START and three lines. Blow into the mouthpiece with steady pressure, like blowing up a ballon. You will hear a solid beep while you're blowing. Blow until you hear a double beep and a click (about 6 seconds). It takes about 15 seconds for the unit to display the BAC.

I wish this info was in the users manual but it is on the BACtrack website. They state "A FLO error is usually a sign that the unit is not receiving an adequate breath sample. This is usually caused by two factors: blowing too hard/soft and/or not blowing long enough. When the countdown reaches 0 and shows "START," blow continuously for 6 FULL SECONDS WITHOUT STOPPING through the long audible sound until you hear a click and a double beep. It is imperative that you do not stop the flow of breath until you hear a click and a double beep at the end."

After reading this procedure I have had no problem at all, and the device is very accurate so far. Compared with a popular online BAC calculator, the results are almost identical. Very happy with this purchase. Another thing I would like to address is all of the reviews stating this breathalyzer is non-returnable. If you read the entire policy it states "This item in non-returnable, but if the item arrives damaged or defective, you may request a refund or replacement". That's good enough for me.

We enjoy a few cocktails when we go out and feel much better having a BACtrack with us to make sure one of us is safe to drive. On occasion we have even had to get a hotel because we couldn't get down to a safe level (even though we thought we were "perfectly fine to drive". Having the BACtrack with us keeps us safe! I honestly don't like going out without it. Our first one was great too! We had it for about three years and unfortunately it ended up in the river when we were at an outdoor restaurant one night - we ordered this one right away!!
