Squirrel-Proof Design & Placement
The Squirrel-Be-Gone breakaway wild bird feeder comes equipped with five collapsible perches, each individually calibrated (press down on the perch with your finger to gauge the resistance). The perches will hold the weight of birds, allowing them to perch and eat comfortably at the corresponding feeding port. The perch will collapse, however, under the weight of a squirrel, throwing it off balance and dropping it unceremoniously, yet unhurt, to the ground. No snacks for the squirrels.
To help prevent squirrels from getting to the feeder in the first place, position the feeder approximately 15 feet away from any strong branches or structures and at least 4 feet up from the ground.
A bird-friendly location for the hanging feeder would be a quiet location, visible to birds from above, and within 30 feet from natural cover, like trees or shrubs, so they feel safe from predators.
As part of the Perky-Pet premium line of feeders, the durable Squirrel-Be-Gone breakaway feeder features a thick-gauge, extrusion-molded, UV-treated polycarbonate tube that resists clouding, discoloring, weather cracking, and impact breakage. The tube measures 18 inches long by 4 inches in diameter (overall feeder circumference is 13 inches).
The feeder’s zinc die-cast cap and base is powder coated for rust resistance and comes in a green hue, offering an attractive addition to any outdoor setting.
Securely hang the feeder from a shepherd’s pole, deck hook, or tree branch using the integrated stainless-steel hanger.
Attracts a Variety of Wild Birds
Whether it’s the only feeder or part of a bird-savvy ensemble, the Squirrel-Be-Gone breakaway feeder will help attract more birds and a wider variety of birds to your yard. It works well for feeding cardinals, chickadees, finches, goldfinches, grosbeaks, juncos, kinglets, nuthatches, redpolls, siskins, sparrows, titmice, woodpeckers, wrens, and more.
Easy to Fill and Clean
The wild bird feeder can be filled with a range of seed or feed options, including mixed seed, de-shelled peanuts, safflower seed, cracked corn, sunflower hearts, or black oil sunflower seed. The lid removes for easy filling, and the top and base come apart for convenient cleaning by hand as needed.
The Perky-Pet Premium Squirrel-Be-Gone breakaway feeder makes a wonderful addition to any bird-friendly backyard and a thoughtful gift idea for any bird lover on your list.

Reading the product description and reviews on the Amazon website, I was under the impression that I could adjust the five perches to break-away with heavier birds like jays, but I can't see any way to make adjustments, and there was no mention of adjusting the perches in the product literature that came with the feeder. But that's OK, I like jays, and the port configuration took care of the wastage problem.
As for squirrels, there are none around as of this writing, but we have chipmunks that have not bothered the feeder. They go after seed that falls to the ground. It took a little while for the birds to become comfortable with this new feeder, but they soon got the hang of it. As others have said, the construction appears to be good quality...it holds a lot of seed...and it's easy to fill.
BEAR UPDATE 8/28/17: It's been a tough summer for bears in SW Colorado due to a late frost that took out the wild berries. One bruin visited overnight recently and destroyed both of our Perky-Pet feeders, and bent over the heavy iron shepherd's hook that was holding them up. The plastic housings remained intact, but most of the perches were destroyed, so I ordered two replacement bird feeders. We'e switched exclusively to oiled sunflower seeds because the birds don't seem inclined to waste them.
We continue to like these feeders because they hold a lot of seed extending the time between refills. Bears apparently like them just fine too, so I'm not putting out the new feeders until those big boys have gone beddy-bye for the winter.
