Weight: The same
Size: Sharkk is about 70% of the size of the Amazon Basics product, which is much larger.
User Interface: Amazon retains your last setting, Shark doesn't. Kind of a minor annoyance.
Power: Amazon uses it's own wall wart and cable. Shark uses a Micro USB which is more widely available in various lengths.
Sound: The Sharkk uses smaller speaker but has a well-designed passive radiator system that gives it a bit more bass. It also has a 6 watt amplifier instead of the 5 watt amplifier of the Amazon product. The larger speakers of the Amazon product provide clearer sound, but it struggles with the low notes that the Sharkk hits easily. As a result, you can't really turn up the volume to make the amazon product louder, because it is limited by the bass response: it starts distorting before you can really blast it. As a result, the Amazon product is no louder than the Sharkk. The bass response difference is slight, but definitely noticeable. I'd give the nod to the Sharkk because of the better bass response. If the Amazon product had a passive radiator like the Sharkk, it would win hands down, but it doesn't.
Quality: The Sharkk is a disaster. I've owned three of them and they have all failed for the same reason: the auxiliary input jack has nothing holding it but the solder to the circuit board. When you use it as you expect, portably, plugging the music source in and unplugging it, the jack will separate from the circuit board, making the product unuseable. They all have failed within the warranty period, and I'm extra careful with them because I know of the problem. You can use bluetooth and skip the wiring problem as long as your devices have bluetooth, but the sound isn't that great. I haven't owned the Amazon product long enough to determine if this is an issue, but if it is, I'll update my review if it is.
Service: The Sharkk is a disaster. I went through their procedures they requested when I told them of a problem and at the end of it all, they want the unit shipped back at my expense. This is a unit that has a high failure rate and you have to pay $18 to ship it back to them, which you're pretty much guaranteed to do because they always fail. As a result, I really would not buy the Sharkk as this tips the price balance over the edge.
Conclusion: The Sharkk is a better product because of it's superior sound and size, but quality problems of the Sharkk make the Amazon product the better choice. The sound quality of the Amazon product is good, not great like the Sharkk. If you want a small speaker that sits in a dorm room and never moves, you'll be happier with the Sharkk, however, you can get stationary products that sound better for half the price. If you want something you can take with you, the Amazon product is possibly the better choice. In either case, unplug the audio cable before transporting them.
I paid for both products. I did not receive anything for the review.
Positives: At first I loved this speaker. It synced great to my iphone via blue tooth. The speaker quality was clean and loud. It was sleek and small and worked great for our home. It charged up fast and seemed to be the perfect portable speaker for our family. Until....
Negatives: We have owned this speaker for since October 12th 2016 (approximately 1.5 Months) and it now, will not take a charge. Therefore, it will not work. We have plugged it into the same receptacle with no problems until earlier this week. When we realized the light did not turn on when we charged the unit. I tried multiple receptacles around our home with no luck.
I am so disappointed at this point. I thought I had a great buy, but it's definitely not worth getting if it only works for 1.5 months and then dies. I have tried to reach out to Amazon Basics, but the product can only be returned within one month. I am stuck with a speaker that will not play music. I hope that someone from Amazon will reach out to me to make this right.
For the price this big portable BT speaker is nice, sturdy, a simple design that easy to use with simple interface. BT range indoor close to 15 feet, across physical metal barriers. The sound is not super or anything but fit my expectation to be a lot louder than the previous one.
What surprises me is a feature that might be considered as cool but really has no place in my setting, it disconnect itself after no activity for a while. I haven't figured out how long the inactive period before it disconnect, but not very long. This is very annoying as I use the speaker as part of my work and need the speaker to be on all day but will be inactive many times during the day.
I've been looking into the manual and couldn't find a way to deactivate this feature hence the 4 stars.
If I can find a way to turn off this feature I will keep it and add another star, else I have to return it and find something else :(
The first thing that I noticed was that the blue LED light that flashes to indicate that the speaker is ready to connect to bluetooth wouldn't stop flashing even when an AUX cable was plugged in and the speaker was playing music. As annoying as this was it wasn't a deal breaker since I could cover the light with some tape.
The next thing that I noticed was that the speaker turned off after a little bit of time of not listening to music. This would be okay if it only did this when the speaker was not plugged in since that would be a normal feature designed to save the speakers battery, however the speaker automatically shut off when it was plugged into the wall. This behavior hindered my ability to use the speaker with my ChromeCast audio as an addition to my multi room speaker setup since it prevents me from wirelessly casting music to all my speakers at once without needing to turn the speaker on every time.
Aside from that the music quality is decent, about what you would expect from a $50 speaker of its size.
I am planing on returning this speaker and replacing it with a different one.
