I read this book over the course of a couple of days. As another reader/reviewer said "it does not read, in any way, like an academic text. It is an engaging, honest, reflective memoir itself." The student examples really drew me and even thinking about my own writing. Going in for my first year teaching this is a great guide to use. Roessing even gives you the standards for the lessons. This book also works well with her book the Write to Read. Combine these two books I believe you will see better readers and writers. What stuck with me the most as an educator is: "Above all, teachers want to avoid dampening writers; enthusiasm for their writings and should not expect finished writings to be "perfect" Sixth-grade writers should write like sixth graders: ninth graders should write like night graders. VERY FEW STUDENTS WILL WRITE LIKE PUBLISHED ADULT AUTHORS. Teachers need to recognize that their students are developing writers"
As an aspiring author, I found the techniques and reproducible in the back to be very helpful for my own writing. If I am able to use this in my classroom I plan to model and write while they write.
