Enter the magical giraffe. Why didn't anyone tell me about this sooner?!?! For the first 18 months of my son's life I've been living like a sleep deprived zombie. My entire evenings revolved around trying to get him to sleep....until now. We've had the giraffe for a little over a week and it works like an absolute charm. The first night I used it, my son was so excited to have a new nighttime toy to play with that it did take a little bit for him to fall asleep. Now that he's used the giraffe, this kid is falling asleep in 15-20 minutes. Our new bedtime routine consists of a little milk, about 5 minutes of rocking, and then I tell my son, "Okay, time to lay in your bed with the giraffe." He then gets into his bed without a fight, turns on the giraffe, and by the time the soft light go out on the giraffe (5 minutes) my little guy is snoring up a storm. I usually stare at him in shock for another few minutes afterwards expecting him to wake up, but he just keeps sleeping. In this past week we've even had 2 nights where he slept through the entire night!! I'm just in awe of how this little stuffy can relax and calm babies.
If you're going to a friend's baby shower, buy this....it will turn a friend into a best friend real quick. If you're going to a baby's first birthday party and you know the little bugger has been slowly sleep depriving his parents for the past year, buy this...they will thank you. If you have a toddler that is a troubled sleeper, spend $12 and try this. I wish I would have bought one sooner. As a matter of fact, I'm going to be buy a backup one to keep around the house "just in case."
Overall, I like it. It has a cute face. The fabric is soft and cuddly. There are places little hands can grab (tail, ears, mane, tag—haha). I’m happy it’s machine washable (let’s be real: I wouldn’t have bought it otherwise). It’s easy to turn the music on and off. It’s a good size. The packaging didn’t include any of those stupid plastic tag things that sometimes get stuck inside toys and clothes (you know what I’m talking about).
I have but one complaint: It’s loud. If you’re out in a room surrounded by people doing things, then it’s relatively quiet. But if your kid wants to sleep with it in a quiet room, it’s going to be loud. I was rocking my son (and his giraffe) in his bedroom and wished there was a way to turn the volume down. If your kid is going to cuddle the giraffe while falling asleep, the music might not be so helpful. Yes, it’s calm, relaxing music; it’s just a little on the loud for a bedtime toy.
-soft material that's easy to surface clean
-easy to turn on (even for baby)
-easy to change batteries
-music automatically turns off after 15 minutes
-fits nicely in baby's arms
-only glows for about 5 minutes
-no volume button (music seems a little loud)
It took us a while to figure out but you can turn the giraffe off by pressing and holding its chest/neck.
