As an experienced carpenter this was relatively simple. Pieces were all precut & ready to assemble. It’s still in construction process but I know it will turn out as desired. I’ve compared my assembly to that of same items in music stores & I’m even a bit better as I really pay attention to detail.

Only complaint is the way the pieces are cut & have dado cuts for pieces to fit & create the box doesn’t allow for the box to totally sit even on the floor as there is a tiny rocking. Now I used corner clamps on all corners, insured my angles inside were spot on but the way it was originally cut doesn’t allow for a ‘perfect’ sit.

I checked similar models of same company in music stores to see that they had the same issue so it has to be in the dado cuts, possibly not deep enough or exactly on but it wasn’t a big deal as it will work as expected.

And I get to finish it how I want.

I’ll be getting another as I’m creating a music room for when my grandkids come over. I have the canon, keyboards, acoustic & electric guitars, mics, tambourine, Jews harp, & harmonicas.

TLDR; the finished product is a serviceable cajon, however, the building experience can be frustrating due to mediocre instructions, questionable materials choices, and poor packaging.

Long version:

Important note regarding the build process - some specialized tools are required that most people probably won’t have lying around, specifically a countersink drill bit and several, six or more, 18-24” woodworking clamps.

The finished product was acceptable. The build process was needlessly frustrating. There are two primary areas of concern with this kit that prevented the build experience from being 100% enjoyable - instructions and materials.

Instructions

As with most products intended for wide distribution, the instructions for this kit include several different languages. Each language receives only two pages. As an (American) English speaker I can only comment on the English section of the instructions. Overall, whomever translated the instructions from the original German did an OK but not great job. Several of the steps are worded in an unclear manner and/or should have been separated out into discrete steps. The pictures accompanying each step are small and of low resolution which when matched with the imperfect translation meant having to make some assumptions on a few steps. Also worth noting is the English translation appears to be targeted at European English speakers as all measurements are in metric, e.g. 3mm (1/8”) drill bit or 600mm (24”) clamp and the plywood panel suggested for use as an assembly aid is referred to as multiplex board.

Materials

The drum is constructed primarily of 3/8” plywood. I have no problems with the plywood construction as a whole. I do take issue with the choice made regarding the thickness of the plywood selected for the kit. The sides of the box have rabbets cut out along the short edges which correspond to dados (slots) cut into the top and bottom panels. Given the thin plywood chosen for the kit, the strip of wood between the dado slot and the edge of the board is also very thin. As a consequence, these strips are very fragile - one was completely broken upon opening the kit for the first time and a second was partially broken / delaminating. While I was able to assemble the kit with the two broken dado slots using additional glue and clamps, it did make the initial glue-up and clamping process more challenging than necessary.

It was fun to put together. You need straps, and if possible wood clamps avail at harbor freight.
You do need a light stain,and or polyurethane to finish. Go light in the sound side, it needs to flex.
Fun project teens on up.
