Just like we recommend students who want to know the history of modern biological sciences to read the Origin of Species and other classical works of that period, I would recommend anyone who wants to know the history of modern medical practices to read this book. There has been a lot of advancement in medicine since then, but to get rid of alcohol as an internal medicine was a great achievement. It is obviously written several decades back; it is not for those who are looking for the latest research findings. However, for those looking for a historical perspective, this is an invaluable piece of writing. A very well written book.

I was a bit disappointed in this book. I wanted an in depth study on the effects of alcohol on various parts of the body, i.e. liver, brain, circulation, etc. In short, I needed a more academic study. But for the average reader, I would think it would be adequate.

By the sources cited in this book, its copyright is ancient. If Amazon could let us know when this was published it might not be downloaded by unsuspecting people.

I was looking for contradictory evidense to the widespread MODERN conclusion that small amounts of alcohol (one drink daily for women, two for men) had health benefits. The title seems to suggest a contradiction, but no. It was published at an undisclosed date long ago and just told us what we all knew already: drinking lots and lots of alcohol isn't good for you.

It does have some interesting historical information for those that are interested in that (not sure they would find this book via a title keyword search though).
