When combined with the OLYMPUS OM-D, this large-aperture lens achieves the reputation of an unbelievably fast AF high-performance standard zoom. Its constant, bright aperture value of f2.8 at all focal lengths (equivalent to 24-80mm on a 35mm camera), combined with other sophisticated technologies including an MSC and Manual Focus Clutch mechanism, deliver high-grade image creation for a wide range of photographic styles, regardless of lighting conditions and distance. The compact and lightweight design also has a dustproof, freezeproof and splashproof construction compliant with professional use, expanding shooting capabilities even in the most testing of environments.

Keeping it short let me start out by saying the my comments below are purely from a photographic (non-video) perspective although I'm pretty sure these points carry over to video too:
Build - The lens is really well built. Feels great in the hand and moving the focus or zoom rings just makes you smile. Its just so smooth and refined... And the weatherproofing (when coupled to a weatherproof camera) just adds to the confidence that its up for any challenge the elements might throw its way.
Focus - The focus is lightning fast with the em5. I'd say the fastest I've experienced on that camera so far... And its always spot on. I am guessing on the em1 mark 2 the focus performance will be even better.
Image Quality - Although you can't physically get razor-thin depth of field as with wider-aperture lenses or larger format sensors, the bokeh is in my view quite pleasant and even at its widest aperture this is one of the sharpest (both center and corner sharpness) 4/3 lenses.
Would I recommend it? If you've invested in the 4/3 system and are in the market for buying a lens to cover the typical (35mm equivalent) 24-70mm focal range (in this case 24-80mm) this is, in my opinion and at least for now, your best bet.
This is the real deal. Ultra fast focusing, sharp pictures, lots of bokeh, great range and plenty of low level light capture.
I have en OMD EM-1 Mark 1 and for the longest time I was making due with my old 4/3rds lenses with a micro-4/3drs adaptor. It worked, but the focusing was painfully slow and would frequently go into search lock. This lens finds targets lightning fast in both zoom and wide angle settings. Edges are very clean, even at the widest aperture and I love that the lens hold 2.8 throughout the range.
Although this is the international version, it is the exact same lens at the higher price. And Amazon has a 30 day return policy - so shoot like crazy to make sure everything functions as it should. The manual focus ring is a snap to engage and easy to operate. Click it back and you're in full auto focus. Very slick to operate.
Well made, clean & sharp glass, dust & moisture resistant
I'll post some photos after I take something worth sharing.
This is my 2nd lens in the Olympus Pro line; the first one is 12-100 f/4.0. I used the 12-100 quite extensively for travel late last year and it will continue to serve as my primary lens for travel. However, for other times that I don't need the range, I want something faster. While I do have a good collection of fast fixed FL lenses, I am still primarily a zoom user, so I bought this 12-40.
The immediate benefit is a faster lens and as well as smaller and lighter than the 12-100. It is well known to be a very sharp lens and indeed it is. Wide open is very good, no need to stop down much to gain extra resolution. Performance is very even across the entire frame, not just at the center. Resolution is a little weaker at 40mm, but that is only in comparison to the excellent performance at the shorter end. AF is instantaneous on e-m5.2. Have not tried AF-C because I have yet run into situations that I need it. Build quality is very high, consistent with my expectation on Olympus Pro line.
It is, however, not an inexpensive lens. I have not compared it to standard slower kit zooms, my recollection is that many m4/3 kit zooms are not bad at all in terms of sharpness. The main advantages of this zoom are much faster aperture, WR and much better build quality.

This is a phenomenal lens! One of the best investments that I could have ever made. It does have a sweet spot where the pictures are just purely perfect. The sweet spot is about 33mm (16mm real). Unless you are going prime lenses you can't get much better. I haven't bought the Panasonic version of this lens range but I'm sure there are trade offs both ways. You will love the manual focus clutch. To get the best advantage in this lens if you put sensitivity to +2 and lens speed to +5 (GH5), you will see a huge boost in performance with this lens.
Wow! This lens is truly amazing for the size and price! It's whisper quiet and sharp as a tack! This is my first go around with Olympus as I had a D7100 before. I bought the EM10 Mark II and loving it so far. This really makes that camera shine! No more cheap lenses for me!
