There is plenty of important information in here, but the analysis of it and the political and historical context in which it’s placed are incredibly superficial and, as such, inaccurate and incredibly biased. It’s as if the author didn’t study the history of modern Korea from any sort of critical perspective. What we get is a history that could be found in any U.S. high school history textbook. It's written from the perspective of a colonizer, although this is never mentioned of course.
Unsurprisingly, there are no footnotes or references in the book! At the end the author writes a few general paragraphs for each chapter referencing sources but not thing them to anything in particular. I’m surprised an academic press published this, although this particular published doesn’t do standard peer review.
