In an attempt to escape from her stressful life as a single working mother of two young boys, Kathy Giuffre books a year-long trip for four in a tropical paradise. At the last minute, her boyfriend announces he isn't joining them, and Kathy finds herself in an unlivable house in Rarotonga, a tiny speck in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean. Her unlikely savior is Emily, an 82-year-old Maori woman with a large white house on the edge of the ocean, which the two women share with two callous missionaries, the ghosts of Emily’s ancestors, and, briefly, a bizarre couple from Eastern Europe. As time passes, Kathy is seduced by the island and its people and by feelings she has never before experienced. This is an inspirational story about having the courage to search for something better and finding it—serenity, sensuality, and, ultimately, love.

Life in the Little Latitudes!2013年2月21日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
Having spent many months in Rarotonga and the Cook Islands, I had more than a few laughs at Ms. Giuffre's take on life in the tropics. Waiting for toilet paper and potatoes to arrive from New Zealand, getting use to driving on the left side of the road and that first trip thru the roundabout are all things I can identify with, Heck, I experienced the same panic. The author takes you on a journey of awakening, a female mother of two, landing on an alien outpost, facing not a familiar soul, has to find a home and begin a year with her two children, far from home. The story is full of discovery, geckos, and humor. A wonderful read.
A Good, Relaxing Read2015年10月24日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
This book is written about the author's life, so as you start reading it, you figure it's a safe bet that the author and her kids are fine, that there's not going to be much suspense or even plot. The absence of a strong plot would normally bother me, but she's such a good writer that it doesn't matter. It's intriguing enough to keep reading and to be a little disappointed when the journey with her is over. Highly recommend for a relaxing read.
Wonderful storytelling...2015年10月12日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
A single mom with two little ones tells her little family's story of a year's sabbatical far away from family and friends. Very insightful. Well-written!
I got to live on a South Sea Island2017年1月1日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
I didn't want this book to end- the descriptions, humor and authentic narrative made me feel like I was beside Kathy. I have read several passages out loud to others- the beauty and wit of her words need to be shared.
