I have purchased another brand of cat grass before that just came with a plastic container, but my cat could not figure out how to eat it on the counter and would constantly throw the plant and dirt all over the place. I got this little setup to fix that issue, since it seemed to be perfect for cats that knock things over! First, let me say that the planter completely fixes this issue. It is heavy enough and wide enough that my cat could not throw it around, and eventually she lost interest in doing so. I even ended up storing the grey rubber base, as it was stable enough without it. However, the rubber base is helpful to keep it from moving around.
The issue I have is with the seeds and growing medium I ordered with the planter. Maybe it was user error on my part, but there were no instructions on how to grow the grass. What I found was that the seeds sprouted very quickly in the growing medium, but died just as fast. I ended up going through several packets of the seeds and the growing medium, which is not soil but something else that seems to hold water. Because of this, I found that within a couple of weeks, mold would grow starting in the growing medium. I really didn't water that much, maybe 1x a week, and I let the water drain out of the bottom for awhile. Other reviews say to simply put the seeds on top and spray with water, so if you've ordered the seed packets, maybe try that!
My cat was definitely disappointed when I had to keep dumping out the seeds and starting over when I found mold. She really enjoys eating the grass and I think it helps her tummy. Overall, I am satisfied with this purchase as I can simply order more grass seeds and use regular soil to grow them in, and keep using the container! Since the planter itself is only $16, I would say it's a steal.
