This book has been an inspiration to me for more than thirty years--it has been a trustworthy companion to my work and travels as a conservationist active in Maine and New Hampshire. Specifically, I found the author to be well-acquainted with the history and relevant references to the period, and guided by a deep love of the region and an intuitive understanding of its people and places. This work is a credit to the richness of an often-overlooked subject and the skill and devotion of its author. I highly recommend it to all who love this landscape--it is a great and useful read.
Only if history is "your thing" will this book be excellent. Well written; well researched; interesting. Furthermore, I'm a southerner trying to understand regionalism as part of the embryo of American settlement.
