We gave them the basket well in advance of the actual wedding as it's summer and the perfect picnic weather, as opposed to late October, and we thought all was well. They loved it, and told us about their plans to use it.
A couple of weeks later, though, I got a call that changed things a bit. "I'm not sure how to tell you this," my friend said. "But that picnic basket is infested with worms or beetles." Seems they had it on display on a luggage rack in the bedroom and kept having to sweep 'dust' from underneath. When that got suspicious, they put plastic underneath it and began to collect what was coming out. The wicker the thing is made of had little boring bugs that were quietly eating their way through it.
OK, this isn't as bad as fleas, or ticks, or carpet beetles, but it's not what you want sitting in your house. How long until it falls apart from structural weakening? How long before those bugs or whatever go looking for something else to eat in the house? I don't know. Our friends were horrified. We were mortified. They brought it back with good grace, I called Amazon customer service and after 4 go-arounds finally got a full refund, and it's on its way back to Amazon with a big warning tag on it.
So should you buy one? Do you feel lucky? Well, do ya?
