First word to anyone who's thinking about spending less (some other options are roughly half as expensive) - I really, really recommend you think hard about what you want to get from your base layer. Read product descriptions closely. Several other companies use a merino-synthetic blend which is less expensive, retains some odor absorbency and moisture wicking properties of merino, and costs less to buy. Some companies make pure merino layers but with low-quality wool that costs less than this Icebreaker. Some companies use decent wool but make layers reminiscent of 1980s sweats that have awful seams and don't seem to flattering for any body type. I know about the cheaper options because I've bought them all, I've worn them all, and they all have a place in my closet. But each is a single-task top compared to this do-it-all.
Where this excels:
-Superior odor absorbency. Merino rocks for this, but Icebreaker beats every other merino top I have and obliterates the merino-poly blends. I've worn this for days without smelling bad. I've sweated for miles of hiking in 15 degree weather with this as my base layer and days later, without washing, it still didn't stink.
-Moisture wicking. Another bread and butter function of merino. Whether pure merino or a blend, moisture wicking often comes down to the cut - next-to-skin cuts are going to transfer moisture better than garbage-bag cuts. So than any close fit works, right? Well, no, because if the merino is on the lower end of quality you end up with a swampy second skin for as long as it takes to evaporate.
-Temperature regulation. I've worn this to grab the mail in 20 degree weather, no problem. It dumps heat when I'm sitting around, and it holds temperature when I'm active outside.
-Comfortable. Like I alluded to earlier, Icebreaker base layers have a bit of a break-in period. I love this. As I wear it, it conforms to my body until it gets to a gentle hug. I have an athletic but uncommon build and every Icebreaker I've owned develops a better fit the longer I own it. This one is definitely doing so. I don't know how this works, and maybe other options do so too, but I've never been more pleased about clothes than I am about my Icebreaker.
-Longevity. So, I'm speculating here. However, all of my Icebreaker layers seem to stay holeless longer, and the holes that inevitably do develop spread less than other layers I own. I've had to throw away merino because holes start to shred into voids. I've had poly tops disappear entirely because a hole exploded in the wash (I may be exaggerating a bit). I'll be sure to update this if this top doesn't meet expectation.
[Longevity update 10/6/2015 - holding up as well as I thought it would. Still not a single hole in the shirt, while I've seen holes develop in other brands merino tops and bottoms in just a few washes. Like all my merino, I tend to wash this based more on how much I've done while wearing it than how much I've worn it, and I recommend you do the same!]
Final word - it's worth it. "If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up." Ferris Bueller.
