Okay so I'll admit, when I first tried it, I couldn't figure out how to get it to self inflate. I ended up pulling off the nozzle completely, blowing it up, popping it back on again. Once I did that, I was able to get it to "self-inflate" on subsequent uses.
It's also very easy to deflate, I essentially just opened the valve, folded/rolled it back into it's original shape and it expelled all the air naturally.
I was concerned that I would not be able to get it back into the pouch, however, that was not an issue at all. In fact, I could still fit something else small in the pouch with it if I wanted to.
The cushion was surprisingly comfortable. I wasn't expecting much, just something to help cushion my spine when I sit (I have sciatica and degenerative disc disease). Not only did it provide cushion, but it completely smooths and cushions whatever surface you're sitting on, whether gravel or concrete.
I'm planning on bringing this with me on a 2 week trip to Orlando next month. We will be spending 7 days total at Disney World and Universal, and the worst part for me is always the long uncomfortable sitting (parades, benches, amphitheaters, the ground, etc). Bringing this with me means I will be able to spend more time doing the activities I love and less time thinking about being in pain. And that is definitely worth the $$!
The cushion packs up very nice and compact so it takes up very little room in a carry on. In fact, I use a carabiner to hang it from my backpack so it's easily accessible as a prepare for the flight.
The only suggestion I would give to Teton Sports is to make one side less slick or more "grippy" as it does tend to slide around a bit.
Note in the instructions they don't recommend you store it long term rolled up, keep it opened up. I left the valve open too since I was blowing into it to get different inflation pressures.
Update: I've used it about 10 times now for flights and while it does make a difference, still can't find that happy spot with inflation where my butt still doesn't hurt like crazy. For me I've found that adding air (not fully, but close) is best (I've tried adding air, and just opening valve and use it at whatever inflates to, and deflating it a little). However I'm thinking a little bit of foam along with inflating it may help. Last international flight added the pillow they give you on top of this and it helped. Be sure to inflate it after you get to (or close to) altitude, especially if you blow into it to add air as it could potentially damage it.
Reading up and asking around, there were lots of people in the memory foam camp, but I wanted something that would fold up very small to fit in my laptop backpack. So I bought this Teton self-inflating cushion. I've now used it for two cross-country round trips with mostly positive results. A few observations:
* It's really a great size for airplane seats. I actually positioned it a bit forward of the back of the seat so my tailbone was suspended with no pressure on it.
* Inflating it just short of full had the best results for me. That plane's air pressure at cruising altitude causes the balloon to puff up a bit more after takeoff.
* It's very easy to inflate and deflate, and rolling it up is quick and easy even when seated on the plane.
* It was a huge help and definitely worth the price, but probably not quite as comfortable as a memory foam pillow would have been. Far more portable though.
A little bit more comfortable and it would've easily scored that 5th star. Still, at this price and portability, I happily recommend this to anyone looking to upgrade their seat.
