The cushion packs up very nice and compact so it takes up very little room in a carry on. In fact, I use a carabiner to hang it from my backpack so it's easily accessible as a prepare for the flight.
The only suggestion I would give to Teton Sports is to make one side less slick or more "grippy" as it does tend to slide around a bit.
Okay so I'll admit, when I first tried it, I couldn't figure out how to get it to self inflate. I ended up pulling off the nozzle completely, blowing it up, popping it back on again. Once I did that, I was able to get it to "self-inflate" on subsequent uses.
It's also very easy to deflate, I essentially just opened the valve, folded/rolled it back into it's original shape and it expelled all the air naturally.
I was concerned that I would not be able to get it back into the pouch, however, that was not an issue at all. In fact, I could still fit something else small in the pouch with it if I wanted to.
The cushion was surprisingly comfortable. I wasn't expecting much, just something to help cushion my spine when I sit (I have sciatica and degenerative disc disease). Not only did it provide cushion, but it completely smooths and cushions whatever surface you're sitting on, whether gravel or concrete.
I'm planning on bringing this with me on a 2 week trip to Orlando next month. We will be spending 7 days total at Disney World and Universal, and the worst part for me is always the long uncomfortable sitting (parades, benches, amphitheaters, the ground, etc). Bringing this with me means I will be able to spend more time doing the activities I love and less time thinking about being in pain. And that is definitely worth the $$!
Note in the instructions they don't recommend you store it long term rolled up, keep it opened up. I left the valve open too since I was blowing into it to get different inflation pressures.
Update 8/2017: I've used it about 10 times now for flights and while it does make a difference, still can't find that happy spot with inflation where my butt still doesn't hurt like crazy. For me I've found that adding air (not fully, but close) is best (I've tried adding air, and just opening valve and use it at whatever inflates to, and deflating it a little). However I'm thinking a little bit of foam along with inflating it may help. Last international flight added the pillow they give you on top of this and it helped. Be sure to inflate it after you get to (or close to) altitude, especially if you blow into it to add air as it could potentially damage it.
Update 8/2018: I brought a piece of 1 3/4" thick memory foam from an old mattress topper for this last 14 hour flight (28 hours if you count round trip) and it worked nicely. Still get a little sore after a while but it was a comfy upgrade. I used an old round margarine tub (large tub), cut it to make a big ring so I could roll the memory foam up and cram it into the ring so it'd fit in my underseat bag. I may still look for something a little smaller/firmer though for next time, but if I can't find anything else will bring this again. I added just a little bit of air into the Teton pad so it would have some give, you could get by with more/less depending on how much you weigh and your comfort level.
Basically, you open the valve and let it sit for 5-20 minutes, then close the valve and roll it in each direction really tight until you force air into the chambers. Then you open the valve back up, let it sit again to slowly fill, close it again, and repeat until you've gotten it to fully inflate for the first time. This opens everything up and allows the chambers to reform their memory to the inflated state. After you've done this, it will self inflate quickly for future uses.
