The connection from the light to the hook is a soft plastic oval - with a cut in it to allow removal of the light (?) although I don't know you'd want to take the light off and leave the hook in place. What ends up happening is that the light will work it's way off this oval and end up on the ground as you continue to walk away.
I fixed this with a bit of tape, so far, but I thought these might be a bit more sturdy than this.
Also, the "light" comes from two LED's near the bottom third of the plastic housing, so the whole device does not actually illuminate. To be honest, you might get better light from a standard bicycle light with a standard clip connector.
I'll use it for now, as something is better than nothing, but will be looking for a more suitable replacement soon.
NiteRider usually has some good lights that would easily fit on a camelback or ruck.
That said, the ones with working batteries are functioning ok, and if you run into the same problem, Amazon's return policy might cover the DoA ones.
These lights are very flat, which makes them easy to pack. They also take a little bit of effort to turn on. This is good because other lights that I have used as my backups are so easy to turn on that movements of items in my bag turn them on. I don't realize this until weeks or months later when I dig out the lights in an emergency only to find the batteries are dead.
The lights are nice and bright. The white one will not light up the road ahead, but at least people can see me heading their way.
