When I first tried them out of the box, I was disgusted. They produced a warped, cold sound that was downright uncomfortable to my ears. I found that the memory foam tips just put pressure in my ears and muffled the sound slightly, while not isolating the sound any better than the double-flanged medium tips, which are my preference now.
I decided to give them some time burning in: I created a 10-hour track that switches between white, pink, and brown noise every fifteen minutes, and left it for a week. OH MY, did they sound better. These are very much reference buds, the ability to hear the different sounds and harmonies made all my music sound new again. Though they don't have as much of a "punch" as the CX300's, the sound is certainly balanced well, and I find that I like the sound better overall. This might put out people coming from earbuds that are more popular, like skullcandies or the like, who have been told quality = cranium-shaking bass, so don't get me wrong. The bass is still there, and very much a strong presence in the soundscape. The beauty is that these give more room for the mids to shine, which are severely muted in the more mainstream brands.
The build quality is excellent, featuring a nice metal housing and a wide selection of tips for customization. The cords are a bit thin, but come with an inline clip and solid strain relief at the y-split and plug. While they won't fall apart on you, those thin cables do produce a fair amount of noise; these are not for taking to the gym or the park.
The carrying case is more bulky that the little pouch sennheiser gives with most of its products. The case here is hard-shelled, zippered, and has two pockets inside. It can fit in my pocket, but sticks out and looks a little ridiculous, so I usually toss it in a backpack or dufflebag, which I believe is the intended location for the case; the hard shell protecting from being crushed, with a bright red line around the zipper area so it sticks out when surrounded by other things.
If you like good sound and are one of those people that spends 45$ on a pair of earbuds, get these. If you have been fine with your 8$ plastic set, consider these a "gateway" to an audiophile world.
I saw these again during a the Black Friday sales and figured I liked them enough and ordered another pair. These aren't the same headphones at all. The travel case it comes with is totally different (original was solid black, this is black and red), the casing of the drivers is different (these are plastic, original was metal) and the sound of these is almost painful. The treble in these is so high and tinny. I rarely ever cut the treble on my EQ, but I had to lower multiple frequencies 4-6 dB to make it listenable. There is hardly any bass.
I dont know why they would downgrade the product, other than to save money, but this new design is awful. Maybe it will get better after they burn in, but for now, I dont want them in my ears.
