I bought this because it was advertised as a genuine HP-- I have bought refurbished and off brands once or twice in the past and always had issues so I pay more for the real thing. My instinct is that name brand copiers and printers intentionally design their products so they can't be used effectively and/or efficiently with products they didn't make or sell themselves but I digress. Anyway, I installed these today and when the test popped up on my laptop to check the authenticity of the two new cartridges, I got the message they were both counterfeit. That was the exact terminology HP used in the test. The product came in an HP box and was sealed and in that incredibly fat bubble container they come in, but why would the HP test that is designed just to detect counterfeit toners lie to me? I am using it and have printed one or two pages and so far no issues, but I'll update if I notice a difference later or if it stops working. My color toners usually last a year, so I'll see if this goes out faster. I've ordered from here I think three times in the past and never had a problem before, so maybe it's a glitch, but I can't be sure. Just like food, if you don't make it or grow it yourself you never really know what's in it.

I recently dropped over $400 for a set of 4 toner cartridges (M/C/Y/B) for my HP printer, at over $100 EACH. Every time you change a cartridge, the machine asks for permission to "check for counterfeits" - It says nice things to you if you use genuine high-priced HP toner. Don't know what the printer might do if I put in a generic and 'fessed up." Would it get permanently "bricked?" Burst into flame? Would a SWAT team get dispatched? The price is absurd, since you can get a complete set of 4 cartridges generic for $47 total! I've been using generics, and they seem to be fine.

I purchased the official HP toner cartridges because I was worried about issues with cheaper knock offs. When I received my very expensive cartridge and prepared to put it into my printer, I noticed that there was red ink all over my hands. The cartridge was leaking before I ever used it! The reason I didn't purchase a knock off cartridge for half the price was that I thought those would leak. So what did I pay all the extra money for? Never again. For now on I will be saving money and purchasing generic cartridges.

Here's the thing: Suppose this cartridge fails after 3 months. Mine did. I started getting blue dots down my printed pages -- including the test page. HP support forums said it could be several issues including the fuser, transfer pad, or toner cartridge. I had a Square Trade agreement on the printer so I took it to the shop. After 3 weeks, they said we'll sell you a new toner cartridge, we can check it, and that should work. I went back to Amazon, but since it was past 90 days, no deal. They did give me 15% off a new cartridge. The best option. The new cartridge solved the problem (for now). So I was left to fend for myself with HP bureaucracy. The defective cartridge had 80% of its ink left, and had printed 297 pages with 800 pages left. On the cartridge box is a warranty which tells you to take it back to the retailer. That option did not work, but it also says, "contact HP support." But, there is no phone number or email for that contact. So I check the HP website hunting for support on defective toner cartridges. They should have some sort of Pokemon Go APP for this. Maybe HP Go. When I did not find the support I needed, I called HP (1-800-474-6836, then hardware support). Please note this was NOT the first HP Support number I called. I spent 92 minutes on the phone with 9 different people. One of which said her computer was down (!), and she would call me back in 5 minutes. Never happened. Once I did get to the correct person, it took another 50 minutes and a second person to complete the replacement. Make sure you get an order number (alpha-numeric series of 10 numbers and your case number -- another 10 numbers). Take names. Summing it up: Amazon could change their return policy since the product is warranted. A local office store would probably have taken it back and resolved the issue. If you have to deal with HP Support, you will be immersed in their internal bureaucracy and rules. Have mercy.

I gave the cartridge 3 stars because my HP Laser Jet has been stating it is critically low on toner for over a month now. Still no fading. HP writes software into the driver to sell more toner. Scam. When it starts fading I'll replace the cartridge.
