I didn’t know much about Simon Bolivar before reading this book. His accomplishments are amazing and this book tells the story wonderfully. As a fan of military history and larger than life personalities, I really enjoyed this book. Highly recommend.

This is highly readable and informative. It’s a great illustration of the cost of war, and inevitably one must wonder, “Was it worth it?” The violence of the early 19th century revolutions is on a scale similar to the conquistadors, or of the Mongols. I had no idea how brutal the wars of independence were until I read this. Bolivar is fascinating, and in the category of people who were catalysts for changing the world. Several times I paused to think, “Did I really just read that?” He was living life - battles, love life, even French philosophy, on a more intense level than most people have ever lived.

I went in cold on Simon Bolivar before reading American Liberator by Marie Arana. This does not mean I had a negative opinion, but rather I knew nothing of the man. What unfolds over the twenty hours of listening time is a story worthy of a great revolutionary: daring and bold with more than a few lapses in both tactical operations and personal conduct. From a personal morals perspective, we perhaps shouldn’t lionize Bolivar for his womanizing ways and the questionable way that he treated some of them before him. But then again, why do we expect saints out of the great figures of history when our modernity is so flawed?

All revolutionaries are going to exist in a state of conflicted legacy because on one hand they did something great (liberating swaths Latin America from European control) but to do that great thing they had to do some less than savory things to get there. I think American Liberator strikes the right balance between lionizing while pointing out the human flaws in the liberator and was also able to show how his legacy is used today for good or evil, which offers a useful comparative for avid historical biography readers.
