This sharpener has 3 different types of sharpening surfaces.
The coarsest (diamond) you can clean with water.
The medium (Alumina Oxide) you use honing oil on.
The fine (ceramic) requires an Eraser Block.
So, I purchased Nathans Honing oil and a Lansky Eraser Block with this.
The tri-stone arrived and all three stones had fell off the triangle block.
It was apparent they had been attached with glue.
I contacted the manufacturer and they didn't apologize or anything thing, but just said I could glue them back on with industrial epoxy. I shopped for it and decided I didn't want to spend $20 to repair a new item and asked Amazon for a replacement.
Two of the stones had already fallen off the replacement by the time it had arrived.
After I sent it back for another replacement, Amazon contacted me that they would not replace it again, but send me a refund.
So now I needed to return the eraser block and the honing oil.
However, Amazon will not allow me to return the honing oil (it's never been opened) stating "For safety reasons, items that are classified as hazardous materials or use flammable liquids or gases cannot be returned to Amazon.com. Customers should dispose of hazardous materials according to Local, State and Federal regulations. Customers should contact their local government or local waste company for directions on how to dispose of Household Hazardous Waste. "
Hmm. Didn't stop them from shipping it to me in the first place. Also, you apply it with your fingers, so I would hope that it is not hazardous. I suppose anything with the word "oil" in it could be considered flammable.
Anyway I have a few comments about this sharpening device.
1, the triangle section holding the 3 stones does not rotate, instead it is a separate piece that just lies there which you pick up and turn and put back down in the holder. This means that it takes two hands to move this item, which is not what I expected.
2. You are in no way supposed to get the honing oil on the diamond stone. I think this design is poor, as I think it would be hard to not get oil all over this thing when using it and cleaning it.
I have now decided to by-pass all brands that make this type of sharpening system.
I have spent way too much time since trying to decide what to get to sharpen my kitchen knives and pocket knives.
I knew I wanted to use a bench stone.
I thought about getting several Arkansas stones so that I could use the honing oil that I cannot return.
I didn't want to mess with the water stones.
Since the diamond stones are the easiest to use and also the fastest, I finally ordered the DMT WM8EF-WB 8-Inch DuoSharp Plus Bench Stone-Extra Fine/Fine With Base which was slightly more expensive.
