Advice on achieving a fulfilling old age from one of the bestselling authors of Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar . . .
After being advised by his dentist to get tooth implants, Daniel Klein decides to stick with his dentures and instead use the money to make a trip to the Greek island Hydra and discover the secrets of aging happily. Drawing on the inspiring lives of his Greek friends and philosophers ranging from Epicurus to Sartre, Klein uncovers the simple pleasures that are available late in life, as well as the refined pleasures that only a mature mind can fully appreciate.
A travel book, a witty and accessible meditation, and an optimistic guide to living well, Travels with Epicurus is a delightful jaunt to the Aegean and through the terrain of old age that only a free spirit like Klein could lead.

Impressed by his Plato and Platypus Walk Into a Bar, this book came in subsequence. after visiting his dentist and getting the news that he would be paying much for his implants, he contemplated on how the option of denture plates would haunt him and came to the final question, what is it all about? why would a man in his twilight years pay off this much to keep himself young and energetic? why are we so afraid of aging to a point that we can go the farthest to deny it? how should we deal with the ceasing youth and flowing time? and the most important of all, how should we confront our age and live it to the fullest? the author gave us many alternatives as he strolled along the coastline of a Greek island. it is not a book on backpack, freestyle travels, but one meant for the mind and spirit. a compact book in easy language and witty humour. i would recommand it to anyone who doubts about aging and the right attitude to face it.

This quiet little book actually changed my modus operandi. I am 74 and learned through this book that I could and should enjoy my very senior years without guilt. I really could put away the French language tapes, nap in the sun,
stay all day in my pyjamas and read, do those things that I might formerly have considered a waste of time or too indulgent,, appreciate long term friends for their loyalty and support and tolerate transgressions. I am kinder to and less demanding of myself and others. My children and grandchildren are now even more important.

Enjoyably urbane, humanistic reflection--but not really an introduction to Epicurus

Daniel Klein is a clear and engaging writer and popularizer of philosophy: what he serves us here is a travelogue on Greek island life and meditation on aging. It ranges somewhere between travel writing and Montaigne's essays. While it uses Epicurus (and even the Stoics) as a launching a point, you don't learn much about Epicureanism between simple ethical maxims here. Klein is engaging and humane enough that this only mildly annoyed me. After all, he said it was travels with Epicurus more than an understanding of Epicureanism, so he delivered on what he set out to do, but I kept wanting him to go deeper with the philosophy or more expansive with the memoir elements. What it lacked in rigor, it made up for in breadth: references to the entire history of Western philosophy with cameo appearances from Asian philosophy come as launch points for contrasting with Epicurus or for reflecting on aging gracefully. It's enjoyable and good if you are want light-but-humanistic-reading to having you dig into heavier philosophy, but it's not really an introduction to Epicureanism in specific or philosophy in general.

If you're over 50, retired, thinking about retirement, this book is for you.

I bought this book on the recommendation of a retired friend of mine. I retired a few months ago after 40 years of high school teaching, and I was looking for some words of wisdom about the time of my life. I had just finished The Swerve by Stephen Greenblatt. This latter book is about Poggio Bracciolinia, a 15th century scribe who tracks down the Roman poet Lucretius's On the Nature of Things. This book delves into Epicurian philosophy, which fascinated me and further encouraged me to read the Klein book. I have since recommended Travels with Epicurus to others approaching retirement. This little book can be read easily in one or two sittings, even allowing time for contemplation. I highly recommend it.

An invitation to consider one's values and lifestyle in later years

This book is an invitation to consider one's values and lifestyle in later years. One premise he presents is that the down side of the "Forever Young" mindset is that if you aggressively pursue youthfulness at all costs, you will suddenly jump from Forever Young to OLD old age - when you can't do much through illness or general incapacitation - you will have missed a natural "old" phase, with all its peace and special enjoyment. Wise. He also brings to life the atmosphere of his Greek island visit. Very beautiful.

A very reflective book that raises a lot of interesting points.

What's it all about, anyway, Alfie? What are we chasing and what are the chances we will catch it before it catches us? The back cover blurb sort of sums up the theme of the book. To paraphrase: A young entrepreneurial type sees an old Greek gentleman sitting near the shore sipping ouzo and watching the sun set over the Mediterranean. Behind the old man are some poorly maintained olive trees. The young man asks the old man if he knows who owns the trees. The old man replies that they are his. The young man asks the gentleman if he knows that if he pruned and watered the trees he could triple their yield, then he could hire workers to maintain the trees and build an olive press to make fine old-world olive oil and sell it in America at a handsome profit; he could be rich. "Then what," the old man asks. "Why, then you could do anything you want," says the young man. The old man replies, "You mean like sit and sip ouzo as the sun goes down?" Especially in your later years, maybe you've already got what you want. You should at least look and see.
