Up to 18-22 watts per hour to your laptop! Huh, not 40 watt you say? This is 100% normal for solar panels. No problemo! Just know what to expect!*** The customer information in this new industry segment just hasn't caught up with this solid, but rapidly amazing, rapidly advancing technology - the, THE power source for the 21st Century... TODAY.
Through testing (2 ways: An ap that reads the whr discharge rate called BatteryBar (download.com); and using a volt amp meter)...
I verified that, at peak sun, mid day, summer, no clouds... the laptop receives up to 18-22 watts/hour**. Unless your laptop is older, or you are doing something high-graphics... that is probably more than you need! If it is generating more than you need at any particular moment, your computer can possibly be charging the computer battery* with the excess wattage, though some or even most computers, to take a charge to the battery from any solar panel, may have to be powered off. This is not a function of the solar panel, but the power requirements to charge the computer battery.
Awesome design physically - 4 rigid panels fold to a very easy to carry size under your arm... and opened up can easily be pointed and angled at the sun - greatly increasing the output of the panel!
Rugged nylon mesh case holds it all together and should keep the panel operating trouble free for years... even with daily use, as I do 7 days per week, sun up to sun down.
The 10 tips that come with it include one that fits my Dell* D630 (pretty standard on most Dells* (tho I can't speak to their newest models)).
My luck with their support is spotty. Better than many suppliers where you can't get a response. Always courteous, but not very knowledgeable... but few of the vendors are. But that may not be a problem for you. The product just plugs in and works!
If you are very mobile and need extra battery storage this works with the higher capacity Instapark and BixPower batteries, tho there seems to be a compatibility issue with the BixPower battery (maybe Instapark too, didn't test) that cuts the delivered output by half.
* Dell has a unique situation - they put a chip on the mother board, and in their charger. Sooooo... it prevents CHARGING from anything but a Dell charger. :-( YOU CAN RUN ON THIS PANEL WITH A DELL... you just can't CHARGE the battery. Not with the computer on. Not with the computer off. Least wise not on the models I've familiar with.
** Actually, I may find that it can deliver more than 22 whr. I've been fighting cancer for 9 months, but just prior, with a more effecient than the D630 laptop, the Vostro 3350, I THINK I was getting closer to 25, or even 30 watts... when I was doing processor intensive tasks (i5 machine, video editing, other graphics processing...). With a week I hope to update the testing and will update this review as well. 062414
***It is NOT a fault of any of the panels - there are losses, resistances of the receiving equipment, batteries... converters... inverters. You NEVER get 100% and are lucky if you get 50%. This is true with all power, no matter the source, you probably just haven't thought of it before. So, this 22watts max to your laptop** is NOT a function of this panel - it is a function of the properties of solar transmission, utilization, etc. This panel is great, no better or worse in this regard than any 40 watt panel!
