I can't seem to find these for the USB3 ports (at a similar price point) but for the USB2 world these things are great.
I have little tiny PCs with too few USB ports, as seems never enough ports for what one wants to do. Different vendor's kb and mouse - two usb ports. External optical drive - usb port. Extra cooling fan - usb port. Try to have two indepedent audio streams going at the same time so have to tack on an external audio device - usb port. I have a ten port hub (another usb port) but powered hubs take up extra space and need a direct connection to the PC. And of course powered hubs need an AC outlet somewhere with an extra cable trailing away.
Tiny stuff like mice (*not the KB*), remote receivers, and external audio devices can all team up and share the remaining ports 2-to-1 as don't want to forget to power on the hub and find that there is no mouse or the silly O/S has to re-"new hardware found" the audio devices.
So snagging 2 or 3 of these does make the back of the system look a little odd, but saves the need for an extra powered hub to run a host of low powered devices. And if things should change, can add/remove the little two port hubs as needed. I have looked into the little two or four port hubs that directly connect to the PC directly, but in many instances those would block the power button, audio jack, lan port, other usb ports, etc. The little cable allows you room to access anything near the usb port w/o blocking it.
