This is an extremely short book. There's probably more content on the author's biography than on actual meditation.
But it captures the simple essence of Zen meditation that most meditation books greatly exaggerate -- probably to fill pages to allay the reader's dismay that there's nothing more to learn.
Zen meditation is simple. That's the difficulty of it. Practice is the core of Zen, not words written about it to enchant the mind.
Good read for the few minutes it lasts. That's Zen too. Things come and go, sometimes very quickly.

Bestselling author Howard Fast’s straightforward introduction to Zen meditation
Howard Fast began to formally practice Zen meditation after turning away from communism in 1956. The Art of Zen Meditation, originally published by the antiwar political collective Peace Press in 1977, is the fruit of Fast’s study: a brief and instructive history of Zen Buddhism and its tenets, written with a simplicity that is emblematic of the philosophy itself. Fast’s study of Zen also inspired his popular Masao Masuto mystery series about a Zen Buddhist detective in Beverly Hills, which he published under the pseudonym E. V. Cunningham. The Art of Zen Meditation is illustrated with twenty-three beautiful photographs. This ebook features an illustrated biography of Howard Fast including rare photos from the author’s estate.

A bit short but a good read

As the title says ... for me probably too short but otherwise I liked it. The editors filled in the book by the biography of the author which is kind of interesting but not really related to the topic of the book. And the actual text is really short ;-)

A short essay on one man's experience with meditation. Here are a few quotes:
"To be quiet, completely quiet, to sit and to listen — this is the essence of Zen meditation."
"If the essence of prayer is to be quiet and to listen, then I have spent a half hour in prayer, and I have made some kind of connection, however brief."
"Zen is more than the practice of meditation; it is a way of life and a way of being."
The second half of the book is a short biography of Howard Fast, an American writer of the 20th century. He published more than 80 works of fiction, non-fiction, poetry and screenplays.

Biased Insight's Review of "The Art Of Zen Meditation": a nice surprise!

I love spirituality oriented books, so when I downloaded "
The Art of Zen Meditation
" by Howard Fast at no cost whatsoever, I was a bit skeptical at first.
By my experience, there is no such thing as a free meal, if you catch my drift. After the first few pages, it becomes clear this work was written by someone who knows what Zen meditation is about from personal experience, definitely a plus.
That this author also wrote "Spartacus" and many other genius works of art becomes secondary, even though, truth be told, it becomes somewhat irritating to see more than 50% of the whole book devoted to Fast's biography and his life's work.
But if you're interested in Zen Meditation, Howard Fast's experience, shared freely, is definitely worth the read, I would brand this one "a gem". I'm furiously clapping with one hand, hoping it will make enough noise for all who are interested in "Zen" to hear.
