Simple, Beautiful, Asus rarely disappoints

I'm an Asus fan, but not so much that I'm blind to their shortcomings. I recently had to return a laptop from them that was a pretty big failure, but they make pretty great components most of the time.

What I love the most about this optical drive is the flexibility and ease of use. To me, one of the worst things to encounter when using an optical drive is needing to install drivers to be able to use it. If you're not aware, that means if you need to install an Operating System like Windows 10 using a DVD for example, it won't be so simple and straightforward, IF it's even possible. Not with this device, it works as soon as that USB plug makes a reliable connection, even if you're not loaded into any operating system yet. Yes, I realize that's probably pretty common these days, but it's also name brand and beautiful! :)

So, Yes, I'd recommend this product if you really need an external DVD writer/optical drive. However, if you're only considering this purchase so that you can install windows using a disk, don't. Windows 10 can be installed from a USB thumbdrive if you have another computer and internet connection, all you need from the Windows package is the license key ;)

Easy Installation - Plays DVDs With Aftermarket Software - Easy Peasy

I bought this because the CD drive in my desktop "died". Sounded like an Apache attack helicopter. Just wanted to play DVD movies, nothing else.

Note, this review was written shortly after installation. If one checks all the "1 Star" reviews, they are all from 2015, so perhaps the drives have been improved since then.

I kept the drive far enough back so that when the tray was open it was over the desk top so I couldn't accidentally break the tray or stress the connections.. The unit does feel a little "flimsy", but it only cost $28, so one shouldn't expect it to be built like a tank.

Installation was easy:

1) With computer off, install cables and connect the ASUS drive. I found the provided cables long enough for use on my desktop.
2) Boot computer
3) Go to Device Manager, find DVD/CD Drives, expand, select the "dead" drive, right click and select "Uninstall Device". Close Device Manager.
4) Put provided ASUS CD in ASUS player
5) Go to Windows Explorer and open the files on the disc. There are 4 major folders labeled "AP". Each folder will have a "Setup.exe" file. Double click on that, and it will install. If you're into burning discs, encrypting, etc you may want to install all 4 programs.
6) For just playing DVD movies, the only one you'll need is "ASUS E-Green" which contains the drivers. The ASUS website has this as a download, but the one on the provided CD is a newer version.
7) IIRC, the ASUS E-Green software is the 2nd AP folder. Install ASUS E-Green and then remove the ASUS CD.
8) Install an aftermarket DVD player app. There are lots of them, tried about 10 and found the Laewo Blu-Ray Player to be the best. Puts an advert up when you pause, but it doesn't interfere with use. Never asked me to register or pay. I had been using this player with the now "dead" internal CD drive in the computer box for some time.
9) put a DVD on the ASUS drive and close. The Laewo player software will either autostart and recognize the disc, or Windows will ask what you want to do with DVDs - pick the Laewo player.
10) An orange/brown box will appear in the center of a blue Laewo home screen and an abbreviated name for the DVD will be in the box.
11) Select the center "Play" button and the DVD will start.
12) you can navigate through the menus with either the up/down arrow keys on your keyboard, or use the mouse.
13 To eject DVD, select the universal "Stop" symbol (the square blue box on the left of the bottom player control panel. The orange/brown center box will appear again. Click the "Eject" icon in the upper right corner of the center box, and the DVD will eject.

So far, so good. If the player stops working properly or breaks, I will update this review.

Does what it promises. Easy to use and reads dvds nicely. I had some initial hiccups but soon I realized I needed to clean DVD surface once, and it was able to read them properly. Great price point also if you compare other DVD writer from known brands. Have not tried to write any DVD yet, have just ripped some of the DVDs which I had. Just to be clear, this DVD drive does not work directly with any TV or Android box, you will need to connect it to a computer to use it. It comes with a wire which has got two USB connectors, but it is not necessary to connect both, it worked fine on my Windows 10 pc even with single usb connection. Also no additional driver needs to be installed, computer should detect it and should be able to install required drivers for use.
