I purchased these to help with safety on the snow and ice encountered. The fit was tight at first. I wear a size 11.5 shoe, and the XL was the recommended size. After the first use and breaking them in a bit the fit for my shoes is a lot better. Initially they were VERY tight and troublesome to get my shoes in to.
The boots have adequate insulation and kept my feet warm in single digit temperatures (I was also wearing merino wool socks.)
Now here is my concern. The durability of the cleats. After just two shifts of walking on snow, ice, and some very small patches of exposed pavement the cleats wore down to an unusable, and almost un-removeable level. I have attached a picture of a removed (2-shift worn) cleat shown next to a new replacement cleat. It seems that the manufacturer should be using a harder metal to construct the cleats, or at least including a replacement set or two in the box for the hefty price of this item.
I like the boots, but the cost of constantly replacing the cleats may lead to me ditching these boots.
I purchased the XL. They fit over my 10.5 Vasque trail shoes with room to spare. They fit like a gloves over a size 10.5, 200g insulated pair of light winter hikers. I predict I will wear them with the trail shoes most of the time, as I can tell that with the hikers they are going to be too warm until its at least -20 below. Traction is absolute, even on ice. Hopefully they continue to impress me all season, and I can come back and give them the 5th star!
Having put these through their paces all winter I have to say I am completely impressed and upped my rating to 5 stars. They made it through a -35F below camping trip with ease and the best part is in the morning when your boots are usually frozen like a brick, these were still flexible and easy to slip on over my light hiking boots. Grip and traction is just outstanding on any surface. Dragging a heavy sled over steep and snowy portages was easier in these boots than using snowshoes with crampon style bottoms. I waded through snow that was over my knees and across a shallow creek of open water-- something I'd never risk normally on such a trip for fear of getting them wet or icing up my boots at the very least. I hiked a distance of 6 miles with them on and they felt great the entire time. My feet never got wet or cold, and I would feel comfortable trying them in far colder weather than -35F, not that I ever will.
