Decent product. It does take a decent while to trim the nails if they are pretty long to begin with, and if you have a larger breed with thicker nails. I would like to compare it to a dremel, but I havent gotten the chance. I like the plastic guard. I can see it being especially helpful if you have a long hair dog, as hair won't wrap around. The light is also really helpful to be able to see where the quick is while you are grinding.

It is rather loud, which scares a lot of dogs, but here is my experience with this:

I got this for my rather spooky greyhound. The first time I turned it on several feet away from him, he PANICKED. Ran into the crate, tried to hide. Getting anywhere near him led to crying. I thought I had just wasted my money and was rather dismayed at first. If you're in this situation, here's what to do:

(I clicker train, but you don't need to for this)
1. At all meal times, I turned the grinder on and set it down just far away enough from his bowl, that he was aware of it, but would still come eat. By the 4th meal (dinner on day 2), it was standing directly next to his bowl and he was eating just fine.
2. A few times a day, for about 3 or so minutes, I would get treats, and take the grinder and turn it on for just long enough that he doesn't panic, then click-treat. As I was doing this, I would increase the length that the grinder was turned on and decrease the distance away from him, making sure to treat just before he panics.
3. Mine wasn't a fan of getting his paws handled in general, so a few times a day, I would get him sitting, and touch his paw, click, treat. He went from pulling back immediately and crying, to, by the end of the second session of this, laying there calmly and letting me hold and handle his front paws. Back paws took another 2 sessions or so.
4. When he is comfortable with having his paws handled and the noise, I would repeat the routine, just touching the bottom of the running grinder to his paw, and treating, so he gets used to the vibration. From here, just work up to actually touching the grinder to his nail, and increasing the length that he lets you do this.

And finally, my life changing secret, peanut butter in a kong. Seriously. He went from me being able to just barely touch the nail to the grinder, to laying calmly while I grind his nails with just this addition.

All in all, I got this product on Saturday. By the following Wednesday, with maybe 20 minutes of work on this a day, he was letting me grind his nails. I never would have thought it was possible if you told me on Saturday, after seeing him crying and panicking.

Good but don't expect instructions!

I've had several grinders over the years, several dremmels (corded, mini cordless, etc) and a few other brands. I use a large cordless Dremmel at home, but those are expensive, heavy and loud (and it is hard to find the after-market guards anymore). I also dislike that the cordless dremmel has a proprietary battery pack so if it doesn't have much of a charge when I'm ready to do nails, I have to find the charging base and wait for the battery to charge. I got the Furminator to try using with the dogs at work who are unfamiliar with nail grinders. It isn't as big or as loud (or as high-pitched) as my regular cordless dremmel, and although the Furminator only has two speeds, it seems to be adequately powered for the job at ... paw. It uses 4 AA batteries so I can just swap out my own rechargables and keep it ready at all times. I read about others having issues with the band slipping and I agree that the bands don't fit as tightly as they do on a dremmel, but the dremmel ones are a PAIN to get off so that might not be all bad. I experimented with the Furminator and while the band will slip down about 1/8 of an inch, it doesn't slip off, so I don't think it will be an issue. The clear cover is very nice and the light is handy as well. The only real issue I had is that the instructions on the package weren't helpful or complete. I searched all over the web (including the maker's web page) and found nothing. I finally happened upon a PDF of the European instructions (they may come with the 6-pk of replacement bands too) here: http://www2.tetra.de/tet_internet_import/import_data/Instruction_Manual_FURminator_Refill_Pack_Nail_Grinder.pdf
That will tell you that the clear guard just lifts off, a fact which is not at all obvious when you look at it. Now that I know how to replace the bands and get the dust out of the guard, I am quite happy with my purchase. I wish it was more clear how the batteries go in as well, but I figured it out with a little trial and error. So basically it's a 4.5 star grinder that loses 1/2 a star because the maker doesn't include good instructions. But the tool is easy to hold, I love the little light, and the sound is quiet (FOR A GRINDER). I wish the clear guard was reversible, so that you could use the light more when you use the little hole on the back of the guard, but aside from that small design flaw (and the lack of instructions) I am pleased. So far it has held up just fine, as well.

Useful nail grinder but could use better directions

We've never done our dog's nails before but have been forced to do so since groomers are closed. The protective cap is useful to ensure only the nail is touching the grinding band. Howeve, it would be useful if it could be put on so that the light is on the side with the small hole. The light is on the side with the large hole in the cap which is fine for larger dogs, but if you are using the smaller hole for smaller dogs the light is on the opposite side and the protective cap only goes on one way.

The grinder needs more detailed directions. The only instructions included are on the box. We had to rely on websites and youtube videos to figure out how to properly use the grinder.

It comes with 2 grinding bands but no details of how to know when to change it.

The battery compartment is bit difficult to open. Also it uses power at a faster rate than claimed. It claims to run for 100 hours on a pair of batteries. I think the batteries are nearly worn out and we've only used it a couple times so far. We are however still using the batteries it came with which are some noname brand so it might have better battery life with better brand of batteries.

A very big advantage to this however is that it cost much less than some other brands. So relative to price, this is a good deal.
