Lead free glaze (I think this is the only common brand if slow cooker that makes that claim; most simply state that their glazes are below the FDA limit). UPDATE: Hamilton Beach no longer claims to be lead free but states that it allows no measurable amount of lead and meets FDA standards. I think Cuisinart is lead free, and there are lesser known brands - Instant pot, I believe, among others. Best to do a current google search if this is important to you.
The low setting is actually low, unlike my previous slow cooker, which ran very hot.
The bungee is a nice feature and works well.
The size and shape are what I want.
There is no way to not use timed cooking - I can't just turn it to low and have it stay on indefinitely. The maximum time it can be set for is 10 hours, so if I am doing chicken stock I have to continually reset it, especially making sure it is set at the max before I go to bed. It does switch to warm when the time is up, but even that times out and I return to find the unit OFF.
The order of the temps on the dial - warm, low, high - makes it too easy to accidentally set it on warm when I mean to set it on low. I prefer the low, high, warm arrangement.
While the problems I have mentioned are annoyances, the deal breaker is that the slowcooker is not reliable. I have only had it for a few months and now it is switching itself off randomly. I set it to low and then return to find the dial still set to low and the display reading "OFF." Obviously, a slowcooker I can't trust is one I have no use for. It cost way more when I bought it than it does now, so I feel really burned.
Give me actual simplicity and realiability, please!
I studied quite a few of these before I decided on one that would be simple to use, easy to clean, look good on the counter top, and priced low. This one fits the bill. I'm pleased with it and I recommend it for cooks who don't want a fully digital timer.
Issue #1) So, this crock pot has what is essentially a large rubber band (you can see it in the photo) that you have to attach to both handles and it holds the lid in place. I don't know whether or not this is supposed to be used DURING cooking or only when carrying the food (i.e., taking a hot dish to grandma's house for thanksgiving). But the first time we used the crock pot was for meatballs, and we noticed that when the lid was on without the rubber band thingy (for lack of a better term), the lid didn't fit tightly. There were gaps all around the lid unless it was very firmly pressed down. So while the meatballs were cooking, we used the rubber band thingy to keep the lid on tight for more efficient cooking. The meatballs turned out great. Then we used the crock pot for a second time to make chili. After it had been cooking for about 3 hours, the rubber band thingy snapped. This wouldn't be much of an issue if the lid fit flush with the top of the crock pot, but like I said -- with the amount of gaps that are present without the lid being firmly pressed down, this was kind of a big deal.
Issue #2) The power cord is too short. This is not going to be an issue for everybody, because a lot of you might put it on your counter right next to an outlet. It's a 2-ft. power cord, so if you use it that way then it will be fine. However, we typically use it on our island which has an outlet on the side of it. Our outlet is not that far from the surface of the island, but if we want to use the crock pot there then we basically have to turn it backwards so the cord will reach. Then it's in an awkward position and hard to reach if you need to change a setting on the front of it while it's plugged in.
I still gave this 3 stars because if you can get past the 2 issues that I mentioned above, then I think it's a pretty nice crock pot to have. However, we're returning ours.
