Great tool, great quality

Just shy of five stars for me. There's no doubt about the quality of steel and the quality of manufacture and finishing with pretty much anything Knipex and these are great like you should expect them to be. I like the notch although I was unsure about choosing that model at first. Not crazy about the volute spring or the plastic locking barrel - kind of fiddly but I think the tool would be slightly more useful with just a hinge spring (although incorporating that may not be feasible really). I've used mini bolt cutters for years with the more traditional bolt cutter head design and they work great as long as you buy a high quality one - those are getting harder to find now. They are the exact same length as the Knipex but I think maybe they cut just a tiny bit easier compared to this design. The grips on these Knipex are more comfortable, though, especially when abusing them with 1/4" steel rod (which they seem to handle ok if you don't mind the extra effort and can keep from getting twisty). If you're looking at these thinking that they have much less effort than other similar ones or the traditional-head ones, you might be disappointed and should consider the longer 10" (250mm) model instead, or a normal 12" cutter if you have room for it and one-handed use isn't a necessity.

Before this tool, I was having to use a Dremel to cut screws to the length I needed. Which was always a messy, frustrating, and time consuming project. Now I can cut through 12.9 grade steel screws like butter and there is practically no mess. These are purely for making cuts, these are not intended to be used as angle cutters (to cut flush to the material), there is another model of Knipex for those applications.

The 8" size is perfect for your pocket and the craftsmanship and durability of the tool is by far some of the best of what German engineering has to offer.

The notch feature on this tool is ideal when cutting objects of larger diameter, however, you can just avoid it when cutting smaller material.. I would still recommend this version over the no-notch, one.even if you never plan on needing the notch.

I do not need to use two hands to be able to lock or unlock the spring clasp.

Because every 1 pound of pressure placed on the end of the handle is transferred into 20 pounds of cutting pressure, you want to make sure that you always keep your hand at the very butt end of the handles so that you are transferring as much energy as possible. While your main hand is holding the handle, you can use your free hand to cover the cutting end of the tool to keep any shrapnel from flying off, it does not hurt, just be careful not to cut yourself.

You get what you pay for, and $50 is nothing for tools that can last a lifetime if you don't go beyond their range of operation and if you just respect and maintain them properly.

This is an amazing 8" tool that is perfect for anyone's arsenal.

Best Cutters I've Ever Owned...

These Knipex 71 32 200 pliers are the best cutters I've ever owned...And I've owned Proto, Cresent, GearWrench, Klein, S&K and a few others. In addition to these Knipex 71 32 200 cutters I've tried the same type Knipex pliers without the notch and the angled ones also without the notch. I settled on these with the notch and the angled ones without the notch. Both have the springs. This pair with the notch can handle the thicker nails and bolts while the angled unit handles the slightly wider stuff like Romex and aluminum flat bar. The notch unit can handle the wider stuff too, but the notch sometimes leaves a ragged cut on the notch edge whereas the wider/angled pliers cut cleaner all the way across.

I'm retired so I'm at the age where my grip strength is declining so I needed/wanted cutters that cut with less resistance and consequently less stress on the hand, wrist and arm in general. Now I wish I had been using them all along. Its too bad that some of the USA brands don't make this type of mini bolt cutter type pliers so we could help the economy a little more. The USA brands have some high leverage units but none that match these Knipex for ease of cutting, at least not the ones I've tried.

The price is a little steep when comparing to conventional cutters, but with the less wear and tear on the wrist, hand and arm they are well worth it in the end. Once you get over the sticker shock its all down hill...

I bought this to clip rusted/rotted fence board nails (I have a three board fence around 1-acre of property). I’m always repairing and replacing rotted or damaged boards, and these EXPENSIVE Knipex tools have always caught my eye, so I splurged. A plumbing contractor at my house recently spotted them and said, “Ah, I see your set of Knipex tools!” They are worth it based on the solid feel and functionality.

Awesome for cutting barb wire or field fence

The offset joint really adds force to the cut. I'm replacing old fence and these make it much easier to cut it into manageable sizes. They seem to be built well, they feel good and solid. I think they'll last a long time. I'm very pleased I purchased these. If you have any amount heavy wire to cut, you'll like using these over standard wire cutters.
