I've been using a USB 2 card reader for years, which was fine for a hundred iamges, but with larger image numbers got to be a bother. I used a Belkin USB 2 Multimedia reader, which has been fine and a reliable workhorse for years. But with more images to transfer and USB 3 available I decided to upgrade.

This inexpensive multi-card reader accepts all the cards listed in the description, and it is FAST! 20-30 minutes trasnsfers with a USB 2 reader now done in 3 minutes. Huge difference. USB 3 vs USB 2 is day vs night. Even though I still have a functional USB 2 reader I'm so glad I got this. Also, this reads micro-SD cards, so I'm good for anything out there. This will handle my XD using Olympus underwater camera, my SD using Canon G7X, my daughters Canon Rebel EOS (SD) and my Canon 40D Compact Flash cameras. If I dedide to use a microSD adapter for the XD card I'll be covered, too.

I've read a couple of reviews that thought it had poor build quality. These devices are just a circuit board and some connectors in a plastic housing. My Belkin has lasted over 8 years and the same build quality. The Belkin replaced a low priced unit I though was a bargain. For a few dollars more the Belkin has lasted years. This unit isn't the cheapest, but it's only a few dollars more. On visual inspection it looks fine and weighs about the same as the old Belkin, so I think it will last.

The included cable has the USB 3.0 Micro-B at the device end and a USB 3 Type A plug at the other end, which will plug into USB 3 ports in your computer. The USB 3.0 Micro-B to USB 3 type A cable is included. If plugged into a USB 2 port in the computer you will not see the speed advantage. Plugging into a USB 3 port will delight you! If reviewers dons't see the speed gians they probalby are using a USB 2 port. The USB 3 ports have a blue plastic insert that identifies it as USB 3.

This card reader can read OLD memory sticks!

I have an old Sony Cybershot camera (purchased early 2000's) that quit working years ago, and it used Memory Stick Pro Duo sticks. (The memory stick in its adapter can be seen in the photo of the reader.) I've kept an old all-in-one printer just because it had a slot that fit the old memory sticks, and it was the only way I could access the photos on them. Recently the all-in-one quit working, so I no longer had a way to access the photos. I found this card reader on Amazon, and it was the only one that clearly showed that it could take my memory sticks. I also saw good reviews so I went ahead and bought it. I'm very glad I did. I had no problem using the reader. I just plugged it into my laptop and stuck in the memory stick, and the photo files came up. I gave the card 4 stars for sturdiness just because I don't know how sturdy it is over time, but it should do well with the same type of care given to any computer/photo equipment. I'm so glad that I now have a way of accessing my old photos, and I no longer have to keep an old printer just to do so. The card reader is compact and takes up a lot less space than the printer too.

This review is based on USB 2 port use only right now. I needed a new card reader that would support my current SDHC cards and I wanted to make sure it would support my soon to get USB 3 system and SDXC card.

This reader works great on my USB 2 system and USB 2 is still faster than any of the cards I currently own and this reader handles them at their full speeds.

Note about USB 3, not specifically this product. I mention this since this is a USB 3 device. The port side on the device is USB 3 and if you want to use a USB 2 cable with this card reader, the device end of the cable has to be micro USB 2, which is thinner than the common camera mini-USB size. My Acer Tablet and some phones/cameras are now coming with microUSB ports/cables. So you might have spare micro USB 2 cables to use with this device if you want. For me this is good info since the USB 3 cable is short and thick and I will want to keep it plugged into my desktop all the time in the back. But when I travel, I would like to take the reader with me and use it with a spare travel cable.

If you want to do the same, just remember that USB 3 (not just this reader) requires either a USB 3 cable or a USB 2 micro cable.

So I like this reader, especially that it has a microSD slot so I don't have to use an adapters with my microSD cards on this reader.

The only thing I don't like about this reader, is that it's so light and the cable plugs into the upper portion of the reader, that it causes it to not sit flat on my desk because of the weight of the cable and lack of weight of the reader. Low weight is nice for packing though. But if they had put the cable plug on the bottom edge, it wouldn't cause the front of the card reader to lift up. This is a minor complaint and not worth dropping stars for.

The other thing I don't like is the cost. But as USB 3 readers before more common, I expect this to change.
