I replaced the old workhorse SM58 stage mic with a Sennheiser e935 dynamic years ago - no comparison in the clarity as far as I'm concerned - but I was looking for a condenser for my current projects. Loving the way the e935 sounds with my voice, it was a choice between the e864 or the e965. I went for the 965 and it's worth every penny. I can practice facing the PA with the cardioid pattern active to eliminate feedback, but in live performances put the Bose PA slightly behind me and off to one side, using the super-cardioid pattern to eliminate the side lobes. This gives me a exact sound image that the audience is hearing without any feedback issues.
A couple of thoughts: I was a bit intimidated by the advertised sensitivity of the 965, and thought it might make it hard to use. Would it be so sensitive that it would be impossible to hide the vocal imperfections? Just the opposite - it allows you to focus 100% on what you want to convey with your voice, and not worry about how to sing the way the mic wants you to. I particularly like the unparalleled way it responds to low volumes at close proximity. Powerful, but intimate. No mic is going to make up for bad singing, so forget that. This mic will simply deliver the quality performance you're putting into it - and guess what - your voice might sound a whole lot better than you thought it did!
Secondly, and related to the first point, I recently bought a $200-range condenser mic that has an absolutely flat response range from DC to Daylight. And guess what? It sounded flat, dead, muffled & muted. Total waste of money. Sennheiser has been at it a long time and they know what it takes to create beautiful, clear, crisp vocal tones. I'm sure the engineers at Brand X thought they'd nailed it with that super-flat response curve, but that's theory vs. practice for you. And you don't save money by buying something that you're never going to use - you'll always end up buying the quality product in the end anyway, so you might as well not waste your money on "bargains".
