Back in '06, this was the first I had heard of "self-healing" cutting mats. Lo and behold, it lived up to its promise, and then some! I put the mat through its paces, generally abusing it with various permanent ink and paint spills, and not really paying attention to where I was cutting (the company suggests moving your cuts around the board to space out the wear and tear). The only reason I bought a new mat is that my old one is becoming opaque with all the stains. We used the old one last night to cut some cardboard, and it worked just fine. We will keep it for messier jobs.
Even without a light box, I have found the translucency extremely helpful for many projects through the years. For example, lining up typeface on my acrylic stamps for layered stamping projects. I appreciate the thoughtfulness of the grid, which includes 45º and 60º angles. I find 12" X 18" to be perfect for my (pretty limited) workspace. I can move it easily, but rarely need to. Even with all the cuts, I can write just fine over it (my messy handwriting will have to look for a different excuse lol).
If I am going to bring plastic into my home, it *must* be a mulitasker. This mat won't see a landfill any time soon, and neither will its predecessor. Since purchasing this mat, I've noticed how many of my favorite "makers" have either the green or clear Alvin mats in their set-ups. Alvin got my loyalty with that first mat, and I just hope I'm right. I hope that sharing my experience with this invaluable tool helps someone, and I wish everyone good luck with their projects.
