There is a lot of confusion on what oil to use in lanterns, but it is really not too difficult to understand.
THIS product is a PARAFFIN oil. Paraffin oils are great for INDOOR and OUTDOOR use in lanterns and lamps with 1/2" or smaller wick, as well as in oil candles. (Some will say you can use this in lanterns up to 1" wick sizes, although most "experts" would advise not using this on wicks larger than 1/2" because it can soot up or clog the wick).
Standard Lamp Oil (Like Medallion Clear Lamp Oil) is also safe for INDOOR AND OUTDOOR use. It is NOT paraffin based. It can be used in all lamps and lanterns no matter the wick size, but should NOT be used with oil candles.
You can also use K-1 Kerosene (ultra pure and clear--NOT THE RED STUFF). Kerosene can be used in oil lanterns and lamps but I believe it is best for outdoor use only. It can NOT be used in oil candles.
And that's all you really need to know!
Hope this helps!!
If you infequently use your oil lamp or are wanting only to color it for one or two uses or a special occasion, then purchasing this bottle makes sense.
Just bought 3 pewter oil lamps and this brand of smokeless oil was recommended by the Danforth store. We had previous oil lamps and the flutes would get sooty because we were not using a paraffin lamp oil, but a less costly lamp oil. This bottle filled all three lamps, small to large. We filled the lamp bases and it does burn much better so well worth the added cost.
