If you need a great filter, look no further! It took me a while decide which one to order but I know I made the best choice with this one. I have a 20 gallon tank for my turtles (red ear sliders) and I’ve used other filters made for 55 gallon tanks and even they couldn’t keep my tank clean. This one keeps the water crystal clear! It isn’t too loud, doesn’t take up too much space, doesn’t bother the turtles... also, it’s a really easy set up. I definitely recommend!!

Okay, but buyer beware

We have a fiddler crab setup in a 10 gallon tank. Roughly half the tank is covered by water about three inches deep, the other half is a sand beach. We have been through two ReptoFilters in six months.

The first filter had a hard time taking in water, despite the fact we keep the water level at or above the height of the water intake vents. If the filter was unplugged during tank cleaning, after it was plugged in again it would not draw water until we poured at least a gallon of additional water directly into the filter compartment. The amount of water required to make the filter run would cause our crab's beach area to erode. Eventually the motor stopped working, so I discarded it and ordered a new filter.

Our second filter was delivered on December 22nd. It stopped working altogether on January 7th. It won't take in water, and the motor isn't running. There is an adequate amount of water in the aquarium, and no discernable reason for the filter to stop working after two weeks. Our fiddler has just finished a molt, and he's stressed out with us messing around with his habitat, trying to get his filter to do its job.

Perhaps this terrarium filter is not meant for shallow water habitats, but no matter. It's garbage, and I won't buy another.

***Update***
After reading other negative reviews of this filter, I followed the manufacturer's advice to carefully disassemble the unit and rinse debris from around the impeller. I disassembled and cleaned the unit. This was not a difficult task. After reassembly, I plugged the filter into the wall, and lo and behold, it immediately drew in water and began filtering. There was only a very small amount of sand inside the impeller area, but clearing it made all the difference.

I'm going to try reducing the water level in the tank to see how the unit will perform. Our fiddler does not like a high water level, and my evaluation of a product depends in part on whether it helps me keep my animals happy and healthy. Time will tell how well this filter will continue to run, but at least now I know how to maintain the unit. Upgrading to four stars, because the manufacturer should provide clear and obvious maintenance and cleaning instructions in the user's manual.

Works well. This purchase is a replacement for the same model. We have sand in our turtle tank and I learned the hard way to make sure the sand is settled down before starting the filter, or the grit will destroy it in a couple of months. This is not the fault of the filter. Also, a lot of people complain that it stops working well, but all you need to do is flush the internals of the filter between the intake slots and the impeller with hot water to get the slime and junk out every so often and it works just fine.

I have a love/hate relationship with this Tetra filter (90gph). When it works, it does a great job keeping our red eared slider's tank clean. We've had him for 10 years and I used to use a ZooMed filter but it wasn't enough to keep his tank clean. Plus it was a pain to clean.

Switched to Tetra in Nov 2016 (thank you, Amazon for keeping my order history). That filter worked without issue for 1 yr before it became too noisy to deal with. Purchased the same filter, it lasted 4 months before it became really noisy. Bought another b/c I couldn't find an alternative filter that got better reviews or that would work with our tank setup. It lasted 8 months before it just stopped working after a regular cleaning. Ordered 2 more b/c I STILL couldn't find a good alternative and the price had come down substantially. The first of those 2 just died spontaneously in the middle of the day after 3 months. Now I'm on the 2nd one. Super quiet but let's see how long this one lasts!

Tetra really needs to take notice of how many complaints there are about this filter. It's ideal for turtle/reptile tanks but the failure rate is ridiculous. Guess that's why the price keeps dropping.

I initially brought this filter 6 months or so ago, but have held off on reviewing it because I wanted to see how well it worked. It is easy to clean and relatively quiet. However, the first thing I noticed about it was that the suction cups do not support it; they hold it to the glass, but not if it has too off the bottom of the tank. I have it in a 20 gallon tank so it can sit on the bottom, but I cannot imagine that it would work in a 55 galloon tank as indicated with the current suction cups; I'm assuming that too much of the cord would be submerged in that larger tank. I was very impressed when I first used it as it did last for about a month between clearings, but, over time, the length of time between cleanings has lessened; and that is only in a 20 gallon tank with one turtle!!! Most recently, after just A WEEK since the last cleaning and changing of the filter both need to be cleaned again. I just ordered a new one of the sane type of filter, as I am going to be out of town for 10 days so I have to make sure that the water will remain (somewhat) clean for the entire time I am gone. Upon opening the new filter, right away I noticed a drastic different in thickness between the cartridge that comes with the new filter and the replacement cartridges. The one that comes with the new filter looks stronger and like it would last longer since the white part is so much thicker. The replacement cartridges don't have as much of the white material and you can pretty much see all of the carbon. I am assuming that this is the reason that the first cartridge lasts up to 28 days while the others don't. If the is the case, it is really too bad that the company cannot make the filters the same. It would make for a much better product. For now, I will continue to use the filter as I have not found a better one and since I will be out of the town I don't have time to try a new type.
