M. Goldfarb writing illuminates the history of Europe in 18 and 19 century cohesively and directly The events, people, and currents of history that explain the transformation of European prejudices into the daring concepts of equlity are becoming evident to an everage reader and not historian.
The Jewish minority struggle for the rights in Europe led to a great intellectual emancipation for the Christian as well .The minority Christian leaders of France and Germany were able to look deeply into their Christian teachings and apply them without prejudice across their lands .
Admirable research and a well written history that many people are not familiar with and in my opinion is a MUST read.

To have found this book was a joy. It connects all the dots in the last 300 years of western history up to the early 20th century. Events are not isolated but connected. We build on the efforts of those before us and in this book we find out who they are...

The Jewish contribution to western culture is extraordinary... When for the first time they were allowed to flourish and not be killed or isolated, all society advanced.... Remarkable what happens when all are allowed to contribute.

Given current events this is an important read as we try to understand how we have arrived where we are.

Thank you to Mr. Goldfarb the fine work.

We are reading this book for a discussion group on Jewish Philosophy. All of us agree after reading the first few chapters that Goldfarb's writing is very approachable and understandable. So far we found that he gives background for each subject. One comment is that we would have liked references to be more clearly cited instead of just being listed at the back of the book.

First this is a very well written history but the subtitle should be reversed into How The French Revolution and Renaissance led to liberating the Jews.
I read this book in order to find How and by what methods the Jews were able to realize their modern achievements.I once read that the Indians in England have a society that studies how the Jews integrate in society and emulate their methods.A similar analysis would have made the book useful rather than being only informative.
The preface of the book says that prior to emancipation the number of Jews of genius or talent could be counted on the fingers and that the previous ten centuries did not produce ten great Jews. But by page 219 he says that the Jews are the fermenting element in western humanity and have been destined since always to provide the elements of change and movement in western civilization.Finally,the very last phrase in the book is sweeping,saying the Jews show the way to the redemption of humanity as a whole,,,But how all that and by what methods?
The major ideology of the Jews after the Old Testament is Zionism.But he hardly mentions it or its mechanism and organization while he devotes 20 pages to Freud.
Zionism in Israel reached its zenith with the 1967 war.Since then it delved into Mini Zionism building settlements presented as great achievements.
Has Zionism run its course as many ideologies do, or does it need revisions as modern capitalism always does.Do the Jews at large still need it, or be like everybody else? is the Israeli mind and its values similar to that of the Jews in general? these are questions interesting to answer.Maybe Mr Golfarg may write an analytical sequel.
