Excellent beginner to intermediate hammers

Let me preface my review by pointing out the fact that, rather than trying to compete with music specialty shops and pro shops, Amazon offers a wide variety of reasonably priced instruments and accessories geared towards the student or hobbyist. I frequently purchase instruments from Amazon for my music classroom, and so far have been quite pleased with what I've bought. These hammers are great for the dulcimer my students play on, a beginner's dulcimer that had come with rubber-edged hammers very similar to these. I find these hammers superior for the soft tone amd for the greater length of soft edging material. My students do not play for long periods of time nor with great force, and these hammers are perfect for them. The leather does not have the rebound effect of the rubber but rebounds well enough, as well as the wood side. If the wrist is properly loose and flexible you'll get a good tone and bounce with almost any material. None of my students have ever broken a hammer of this weight and shape (or any hammer at all). I have bought several items of this brand from Amazon and believe them to be of high quality, durable, with a good sound, attractive, and easy to use.

I recently moved across the country (nearly 1,000 miles) and while I packed up my selection of hammers for the move, I brought my hammered dulcimer in my car, but inadvertently allowed the movers to take the box. Movers didn't show up right away...if fact it took them nearly a month to get my belongings to me...what a horror story that was, but in the meantime, I had my hammered dulcimer with no hammers to play with! Bought these as a quick, inexpensive way to get back to playing. Nice little hammers!

Not a solid strike

They look nice. But they're so light and flimsy feeling. When I hit the strings the shock of the hit goes back into the hammer and my fingers--not into the strings! The result is that the strike of the string doesn't feel good and solid. It doesn't bounce off the string well, so I can't play bounces as accurately. It makes you want to grip the hammers more tightly, which feels like bad form. On other hammers I have, I barely feel any shock in my fingers.
Also, they are very narrow so they feel small in the grip. I use them for quieter practice, but never for performance.

These hammers are beautiful, but they are SO lightweight that I was afraid I'd break them when striking my hammered dulcimer. Maybe they work for folks with mountain dulcimers, but for my hammered dulcimer, I was too afraid of breaking them to use them, unfortunately!
