Once we got it on, it looked great! However, if you are one of those who likes to give your dog a hug or snuggle just know that these spikes don't just look like spikes - they don't feel great when touched. That said, I worried about when he would snuggle down to sleep and the collar would turn around on him - if they were going to stick him in the chin/neck.
I intend to return this one and get another very similar looking one from the same company. Just not spikes!
One more thing, I got this leash to go with it and it looks really good with it: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B004VMK53U/ref=oh_details_o04_s01_i00
This collar is not 18 inches long. It is 17 inches long and the widest point it can be closed is at 15 ½ inches. When it is closed, its complete circle is 14 ¾ inches and that is at its widest possible point. I measured my puppy's neck before I ordered this and it was 15 ½ inches, too small for the 16 inch so I ordered up one size.
As a side note, this is not especially a good collar for a puppy as the spikes are actually sharp. We have two puppies in the house and it's just not a good idea.
Seeing this, in my opinion, while this is truly one beautiful collar, it should only be used on dogs that have a very mellow temperament, as using it on a dog that is jumping all over the place (like my dog is) will almost surely result in a bad, unfortunate accident one day. On my side, I decided to keep the collar and save it to use it on my other dog, a 5 year old labrador that is far more mellow than my 2 year old dog and so, letting her wear this beautiful collar might be OK ...I am still going to file down the spikes on it before placing it on my 5 year old dog before using it on her when her current collar wears off.
When I got the collar, the smallest hole was far too small. As in, didn't even fit around his neck. I had to manually put a hole in the leather to get it to barely fit. If this collar is 18 inches, then the last hole should've been the right size for his neck. But instead, the hole I punched manually was still a bit too small. The real length of this collar is around 16--don't be fooled.
This is a very nice collar and the price was reasonable.
