Nothing is quite like the beauty of natural dark stone. Our Slate slabs make unique servers, table runners, placemats and trivets. Identify cheese or appetizers by writing directly on the slate. Clean with a damp sponge. Natural edge, clear seal and a full felt backing. Each piece of slate is as individual as a snowflake. Slate should never be used as a cutting board.

Well what I received was a oddly machined in no way remotely natural looking surface (no I don't speak about he soft backing)
Please see the attached pictures and compare it to the picture the seller posted.
Packaging, dear me, people, two thin layers of bubble, thrown in a bigger ox with a handful of wrapping, I am not sure how it arrived here in one piece, but it did.
So, I asked for a replacement, dudds happen, but quality control must have been out that day...... if the second version also will look like that I will downgrade to 1 star, if the next delivery looks fine, I will upgrade it accordingly.
So today arrived the replacement, pretty quick. But the same bad packaging. This time the horribly ugly striping is less prominent but still visible in one stripe. The picture hey show in the ad is far from what you get. I wished for a stronger grain and got a pretty even, machined surface which is a shame.
I do have the same problem as many others, the bubble wrap left spots. They show when wet not really when dry.
So I upgraded from 2 to 4 stars.
The cheese tray arrived quickly, but as other reviewers said, it was not well packaged. Fortunately, it was not broken as others had experienced. It was wrapped in one piece of bubble wrap and some brown "craft" paper was bunched up in the box.
That being said, it is quite pretty. Mine had some faint, weird white-ish discoloration on one edge. I thought about returning it, but I figured it could have just been a function of the slate. I also discovered that when I use the tray, I can write the names of the cheeses on the tray with chalk, which will hide the "flaw". So, I decided to keep it.
There IS a very thin felt backing on the bottom, but it doesn't extend to the corner, so I purchased some felt "buttons" and placed them on the corners as well as in the center of the cheese tray. I did this only because I was worried about scratching my table with the corners.
I do think that I will have to take care when storing it because it is thin and one good bang could possibly break it.
It sounds like I'm complaining a lot, but honestly, its so beautiful and the size is perfect that a few little "issues" do not detract from how much I love this item. I just think its important to be clear for others who are considering buying this.
If you do purchase it, I would recommend picking up a pack of those inexpensive felt buttons.
Overall, I'm very glad that I made the purchase and I can't wait to use it the next time I entertain. It looks beautiful and its quite unique.
After further review... [updated 11/14/09]
After my initial unpleasant experience with receiving the original order in TWO pieces, I must commend Amazon.com for their speedy and efficient care in replacing the damaged item. Within minutes after alerting Customer Service, the replacement product was en route to my home. Upon opening the parcel, I found the slate cheese tray intact with plenty of protective packing material assuring its safe journey.
Now to the product itself: The slate is of a very high quality, quarried in New England. The surface texture is unfinished and natural, allowing for the beautiful grain of the slate to be enjoyed. After cutting the raw slate to size, the entire edge perimeter is hand-knapped to give a very natural and smart appearance. The underside of the cheese tray is thoughtfully lined with a thin felt material to protect any surface upon which it is placed. The 12 x 24-inch dimensions are accurate within an 1/8". THICKNESS of the item is where I have concerns and is the reason I give the product only FOUR and 1/2 STARS. At only 5/16" thick, the length of the tray combined with the relative softness of the material demands the user take great care to avoid breakage. I would highly discourage using the tray to carry items weighing more than a combined weight of 5 pounds unless it is supported directly underneath the tray and not carried from the edges. To be safe, you should place the empty serving tray where it will remain for the entire event, and then place the items to be utilized on it afterward. Clean the tray only by wiping it down with a soft, damp cloth and avoid the use of harsh solvents and cleaning chemicals. Minimal use of a plastic scrubbie or soft-bristled brush could be used for heavier deposits. In my estimation, the use of a dishwasher is out of the question.
I use this product on my kitchen as a centerpiece paired with the J.K. Adams 9 by 9 by 2-1/2-Inch Slate Riser for my finishing salts, aceto balsamico and olio nuovo cruets (Chef's Planet 5 oz Glass Cruet and Chef's Planet 8 oz Glass Cruet) , cheese dome (Cheese Dome- Walnut w/hand-blown glass - Sagaform Inc.) and utensils, as well as a small plant arrangement.
With common sense use and precaution, this slate cheese tray will provide years of enjoyment and elegance.
They came very well wrapped and protected, damage free. My mom needed somewhere to place hot pans, directly out of the oven, and after some research I learned Slate could be an attractive, affordable option. I bought her two of these, one for each side of her stove. She loved them! They come with a nice heavy felt lining on the under-side. The only downside to Slate is that it scratches, but these can be removed with a little mineral oil. I think the rough edges and occasional scratch just add to the natural look of the stone. ;-) Whatever your purpose, they are gorgeous.
