Forgiving and easy to play

Compared to the first whistle I bought, the "Feadog 'D' Irish Tin Penny Whistle In Black", this one is WAY easier to play. It is a slightly larger bore and requires more air, but delivers a pleasant, clean note without what I'll call the "whistley" over-tone that the Feadog is prone to give unless you get the air pressure absolutely perfect for each pitch. I'll put in a pitch for Online Academy of Irish Music as I write this review, as I'm using their lessons to learn, and they are good. I'd be a lot farther along in my learning if I'd had this whistle from the get go. I'm looking forward to playing it through more lessons in the coming weeks.

Am That I Am

Not the best second octave

I have six high-D whistles. I like the low octave on this but the high octave doesn't play that well. I like having a bunch of high-D whistles as I can leave them around the house and pick up one up anywhere and play for a few minutes. But, they are so cheap, cost really isn't that big a deal. Most cheap whisltes are $8-12 each. I have a Dixon Trad High-D that cost $28. It is ten times better than all my $8-12 whistles. I'd recommend that to anyone who wants to learn to play whistle to anyone wanting to learn whistle. Yes, $28 is over twice $12 but it's still chicken feed when you consider the time you will spend learning to play. You might not eble to afford a $60,000 car over a $25,000 car but anyone can afford a $28 whistle.

Love this Waltons whistle. I tried several others, and this is by far the best. I even ordered a second one so I can keep one packed for gigs and have one next to my desk that I can grab for practicing anytime. I was amazed at the consistency. I opened the second one and was immediately able to make it sound just like the first. It's very precisely made. One thing I like about this one as compared to others, especially those with a tapered end, is that the low notes come out more easily, and it has a fuller sounding tone in the entire range.

An interesting Irish musical instrument that is fun to play.

I have been into numerous musical instruments learning to play them (Harmonica, Recorders, Flutes, Clave, Maracas, Kazoos, Djembe, Darbuka, Bongos and other instruments) fairly well over the last ten plus years. I recently saw this interesting instrument (Walton’s (established 1922) mellow D Irish Whistle) for a bargain price on Amazon and got it in only one day after I ordered it.

I found it to be an interesting musical instrument with a unique sound. It is just less than 12 inches long and I found it easy to play making basic music; however, like with all my musical instruments I will seek out lessons on line to become better at it. I like all kinds of music including Irish songs and this Irish Whistle will be added to my instrument collection.

Arrived with a dent in it

The shipping box and plastic packaging looked pristine and undamaged, but the whistle itself arrived dented- which makes me suspicious it may have been a quality control issue. It's price point was just enough for me to be peeved at the waste of money to keep it, but cheap enough that it would be too much of an inconvenience to hike to my nearest return center to send it back. Other than that, the lower notes have a sweet mellow sound, but the higher ones squeal something fierce and terrible- either because I'm new and breathy, or because I'm unlucky and the dent is really inconvently placed by the finger holes. Either way, I'll likely give this to my kid to play with and buy a different brand just to get some small satisfaction from being petty. I'd still actually recommend it as you probably won't have my luck in receiving a damaged one.
