Frequently Asked Questions:
Q. What are the most popular bird seeds to use?
A. Black Oil Sunflower Seed is the most popular bird seed. It is much smaller than the traditional sunflower seed and best for those birds with smaller bills, such as the sparrow, junco and goldfinch. This seed is accepted by the greatest variety of birds.
Mixed Seed is also popular. It is best to buy the mixes that contain white proso millet, a tiny cream colored seed with a shiny shell. Mixes containing finely cracked corn and black oil sunflower are also preferred by a large number of birds.
Nyjer (Thistle Seed) is imported from Africa and Asia. Nyjer won't germinate, however, it has a tendency to become moldy due to lack of air circulation. If you notice mold on the seed, it must be removed from the feeder and the feeder must be cleaned thoroughly.
Q. How do I clean my bird feeders?
A. No/No feeders can be hand washed. Before filling your feeders with fresh seed, it is recommended that the following precautions are taken:
1. Remove all old seed.
2. Soak feeder in a light water/bleach solution (9 parts water to 1 part bleach).
3. Gently cleanse feeder and allow to air dry.

The only reason I am giving this feeder 4 stars is that the construction could have been a little more sturdy in terms of squirrel-proofing. The squirrels can and do get to this feeder and yes, they can be little pigs, but it doesn't bother me to share with the squirrels as long as the birds are getting turns as well. However, I do mind that despite my efforts in buying a wire feeder, the squirrels were still able to do damage to this feeder. The problem area lies between the middle and bottom sections. If you zoom in on the photo, you'll see a thin wire that wraps around the main wire pattern, holding the middle and bottom sections together. I didn't notice this at first until I found the feeder hanging at an odd angle one day. It was then that I realized the pesky squirrels had actually eaten through that connecting wire, so the bottom section was hanging open - no longer connected to the upper sections - on one side. Thankfully, they hadn't eaten all the way around and sent the bottom section crashing to the ground entirely. Re-wiring this thing is no easy task as you have to weave the wire up through the bottom section, through a hole in the metal plate that serves as the base of the middle section and then get the wire to bend outward enough that it will come back out toward you through the wire mesh of the middle section. Then you have to send the wire back through the bottom section and repeat this process all the way around. Once you're done, the feeder may not look as pretty as it did in the beginning, but it may be sturdier. If you want to avoid all the trouble with squirrels, you might want to reinforce this wire before you ever hang it for the first time.
Aside from that middle wire needing to be thicker and more squirrel proof, I really did end up liking this feeder. Many birds can feed on it at once and it's heavy enough that it doesn't blow around much in the wind.
So save your money and just get the two-tiered one. Your birds will be happier.
