Other than those downsides, the grill does work very well. I like zucchini on the grill or from the oven and the HamBeach grill cranks 'em out in about 8 minutes, perfectly cooked. Frozen hamburger patties take about 10 minutes to do and, again, they're about perfect, at least to me. Cleanup is a bit messy as the grease will splatter outward (to the rear of the grill) during cooking and you have to wait for it to cool down about 30 minutes or so to remove both top/lower grills for insertion into the dishwasher.
The HamBeach grill does not take up a lot of counter space which is another selling point. All that said, I think it's a good, but not great grill to have around.
Fortunately I found this works perfectly for what I needed. Just let it warm up for 6 minutes as the instructions said and put the burgers on. The grill got hot enough that it gave a nice sizzle to the meat as soon as it hit the grill, searing them perfectly. I like my burgers nice and thick to so I was worried about it getting too hot, but after about 7 minutes they were perfectly cooked inside and nicely browned outside.
As far as cons, I have two but they're not really anything big. For one, there is no on off switch, which means you have to unplug it whenever it's not in use. Also, there is no back stop, so when you use a spatula the meat can keep sliding all the way back and would fall off if you let it. Simple enough to just use another utensil to help slide it onto the spatula though.
It works great, and while nothing can compare to outdoor grilling, this grill makes great burgers, chicken, vegetables, and panini's. Everything is beautifully seared and juicy. I even made grilled pineapple...yummy. Clean-up is quick and simple. Just let it cool for a few minutes and put a few wet paper towels in it and close the lid for a minute or two and wipe most everything off the surface, then when it is completely cool take the grids off and clean them with warm water.
The surface isn't non-stick at all. Meat always sticks to the top half, so when I open it the meat is all in the air with the grease dripping down through the gap onto the counter. Tried spraying it with non-stick first but it's still the same. Have had it too long to return so I'll drop this thing off at good will and buy a foreman
