In my opinion, NOTHING beats this product. Even their new liquid kind they've come out with is not the same for several reasons. 1) The liquid dissipates much more quickly 2) Doesn't last as long for spraying BUT costs more 3) The dispenser costs more (I think because the DESIGN simply looks sleeker/better 4) Liquid leaks more easily AND if you drop it or spill it, it's GONE. If you drop the granules, they can be scooped up and retrieved so not a total loss.
STICK WITH THE TIME-PROVEN GRANULES!!
I've tried different brands too but none hold a candle to Miracle Gro!
Trust my experience here. There might be some a little cheaper and LOTS that are more expensive.
My other piece of advice is just be patient and seek out the deals. Once you find the deals: STOCK UP! This stuff lasts a long time season to season.
Even now, on Amazon, the deal on the 10-pound is SO much better than ANY of the other weights! You just have to pay attention to the pricing per pound. Bigger isn't always better like we all grow up thinking about "volume discounts."
A quick word about how to use: Don't forget to cover all the leaves of the plant too while trying not to just "pound" the flowers (like in pepper/tomato plants). Then, aim for a few seconds at the base.
I have 7 raised beds and I'll mention is (for effectiveness AND cost savings): start at one end of your garden and wet everything (soil and leaves) and keep moving through your garden. THEN, when you reach the end, work your way back and give everything one more good wetting as you move back to where you began. Also, if you'll leave the sprayer parallel to the ground while spraying, you'll also save lots of the product. If you aim straight down at the plants, the granules are used up much more quickly without any noticeable advantage!
I've had years of experience using this product and I'll never change. I'll stick to the blue granules as long as they make them.
Oh, one last thing: if you'll not leave your sprayer out in the sun, it'll last YEARS longer. If left exposed in the sun, leaks can develop and leeching of the plastic too. Just common sense but worth mentioning. It's very easy to just leave the sprayer outside soaking up the sun rays but, if you'll just put it inside or in your garden shed, a sprayer CAN last 8-10 years! Outside, it MIGHT last 2-4. They don't cost that much but why waste your hard-earned money??
Hope this helps all who read it.
we have a really nice yard in all of the houses that we have owned. one big thing that we have used is the miracle gro all purpose plant food. the flowers are great, the trees and shrubs are always growing like crazy. we normally don't have a green thumb, but care comes down to using the plant food once every two to three weeks.
it is like a zen thing after you load up the spray container with the blue food crumbles. the constant coverage is easy to do and the plants grow well after usage. one thing is necessary to point out. load up the blue food stuff in a place where the color blue is not problem. the little particles of blue food that does not get put into the spray mechanism goes on the floor. the blue stains the concrete and is somewhat hard to clean up, even with a powerful spray hose end.
it depends on the size of your yard, the types of plants and size of trees and shrubs. but, this plant food works well for us. when we get comments on the colorful front yard plants, we beam with pride. back in our minds we attribute to remembering to feed the plants on a bi weekly basis. that keeps everything green and healthy.
Two tips. Watch the price of this. They are all over the place. When the price is right buy it on Amazon. Know what your local store sells it at. This is a 10 Lb pack and it lasts a while.
Tip #2 . When I use miracle grow outside (for large areas, I sprinkle a few inches away form the plant but within the drip line, and then water. I skip the water, if I know that it will rain soon. I use about 1/2 of the small scoop per plant. This is not in the instructions, but it is what I do, instead of mixing it up and then carrying around the water can.
