However, if you have a prima donna, stubborn, entitled dog, here's additional help. Make anyone who might laugh leave the room. This is a bridal fitting. 1st boot. Praise and treat. (No, you didn't tighten the velcro enough.) 2nd boot, treat and let her stand. Praise for cuteness.. treat. Now all 4 boots.. Praise, Lease and walk her a few feet, not noticing that she's being dragged. Massive praise for wearing them and "walking" even if she doesn't.. Treats in the boots then, to her confusion say "Sorry! No more play time with the boots today! Quickly take them off.. Sorry, no more! Next time! Much later, put treats under the boots for your dog to find, (no attempt to put boots on) then.. "Sorry, no more fun with the boots!" Next day, same thing, longer walk (drag).. maybe she'll walk.. 3rd day, you should be all set. Fron now on, every time taking off the boots, praise every so often pairing it with a treat. Now, Molly loves her boots and will romp in the snow.
Muttluks have helped Molly and me through 6 Boston winters. I'll be interested in hearing your experiences with these.
One of my dogs get's hotspots on his feet and during the winter months with snow, salt, and chemicals applied to the NYC sidewalks and streets life for his footies can be painful. I've searched everywhere for something that would be comfortable to wear, wouldn't fall off and would protect against salt and chemicals with no avail.
Mukluks by far are the best boots I've found they fit him well and don't fall off on walks but their NOT waterproof. As the saying goes necessity (desperation) is the mother of invention. I happened to have a bar of Otter Wax i had used to waterproof some material.
For all four boots I'm not going to lie it took about 2 hours but it was well worth it! Below are all the steps i used. I'm confident my boy's feet would stay dry walking through small puddles but i think they would leak if fully submerged. As with any other waterproofing this would require maintenance of keeping them clean, washing with leather soap and re- waterproofing on occasion. The Otter Was doesn't stretch the material and as time goes by like with any other waterproofing product the more you maintain and reapply the more waterproof the item becomes.
Note: The company suggests putting them in the washer... after the wax is applied that would be a really bad idea.
Needed: Hair dryer, Ottor wax, a soft toothbrush, some rags
Step one: unwrap the velco tabs and move them aside so they don't get dirty (the black leather does bleed a little (not much)
Step two: use a hair dryer to warm (I used high heat) the soles including the seamed areas.
Step three: rub the wax into the leather and make sure to get plenty on the seams If you get any on the front heat the wax; it wipes off.
I used a soft toothbrush to rub the wax into the seams as well as into the leather itself. reheat, reapply wax until the rigid and rough leather surface
is %100 percent smooth. It took about 30 min per boot but again for us it was well worth it. although i did waterproof the seams i was careful not to get wax on the front nylon portion although if i needed I'll go back and rework that area.
I posted pics below... The boot on the right hasn't been touched. The boot in the middle is finished and the one on the left is almost finished.
After i was finished i put them in the sink and left them there to test my handy work and they held up as expected!
There are plenty of how to videos on you tube you can find that may help. I'll add that the boots actually being water proof depends entirely on your handy work. For many it might not be worth the two hours and maintaining the waterproofing but for us it is.
