One of the problems (as pointed out by other reviewers) is the fact the base blocks water from reaching the drain if placed directly above the drain. In order to accommodate this design flaw, I have often tried to place the large colander offset from the drain (keeping it away from the center of the sink if possible). I wish the handles were larger and flatter. It would be nice if this could sit on the top rim of the sink so water would flow freely down towards the drain (and the colander wouldn't have to even touch the bottom of the sink).
When I tried to clean the colander, I grabbed a paper towel to wipe it down. The holes shredded the paper towel in the first pass, which I should have expected looking at the metal design. When hand washing, it looks like it will have to be rinsed and dabbed (not wiped) dry.
Compared to the other Amazon.com colanders, I recommend this one. There is some room for improvement, but it works fairly well. I will update this review if I notice additional details with repeated uses.
It is smooth on the inside but rough (like a grater) on the outside - this makes it difficult to wash by hand- I use a brush as it ruins my sponge
I have 2 sizes, the large isn't that big and the medium is quite small
The rough texture makes it difficult to dry with a kitchen towel- they can snag
The holes are too big to use to rinse quinoa
When rinsing brown rice before cooking some grains went through the holes and some got stuck in the holes
If placed over the drain in the kitchen sink it stops the water from going down- I bought a sink rack that lifts it off the sink bottom so that solved the problem
The colander is sturdy and the handles are a nice shape and size
I like the fact that it is stainless as i can place it over a pot of simmering water
I like the fact that it can hang by the handle
It works and I use it a couple of times a week, mostly for washing berries, cherries or something without too much bulk- I can not use this to wash Kale or spinach or other greens - if i were buying another colander i would look for the RSVP brand but this will do
It doubles as a course strainer since the holes are all over and relatively small and is super for capturing all the aromatics and bones you've boiled to make a stock, while allowing the stock itself to flow through to your bowl or large soup pot.
I really needed a strainer this size that was footed so it would sit securely in the sink, but also sit inside a bowl when I wanted to save the liquid and I'm delighted with this product. It is sturdy and well made. Highly recommended.
