We recently purchased this product to shelter us from the blistering heat of the summer and found, to our amazement, that it worked relatively well with some caveats. The platinum adhesive film blocks about 99% UV rays and reject 71% of solar energy. We tested this product in an apartment complex with vaulted ceilings on the highest floor. Overall, we did notice a small, but noticeable decrease in heat throughout the apartment (approximately 5-8 degrees cooler). The Application of the product was much easier to be applied on regular vertical or horizon windows than applying it on larger surfaces like a sliding door.

Applying the adhesive for the first time was particularly difficult, but it got easier after several applications. We did noticed some bubbling throughout the film, but they weren't as noticeable from afar as they were up close. The instructions that were provided with the product were great, but the online tutorials on Youtube did a much better job of providing exactly what was needed to be done and we recommend looking at those directions. The film's dark color was somewhat noticeable from the outside, but it was not a full blackout style where you couldn't see anything from the outside in.

Our Recommendation: One Gila film 48 x 15 would be enough for one sliding door or 4 regular vertical windows (This is an estimated and dependent on the size of your window). We highly recommend measuring your windows before buying how many films you might need and buy the Gila kit [[ASIN:B002YXPITY Gila Window Film Complete Installation Kit]] to make applications easier as the film does not come with the kit.

Our rating scale
Design: 4/5
Utility: 4/5
Effectiveness: 5/5
Noticeable flaws: We found that there were some bubbling issues when applying the film and it was much more difficult when applying the film on larger surfaces like a sliding glass door. One crinkle of the film made marks on the surface that was noticeable from the inside compared to the outside.

Our answers to the frequently asked questions:

I live in an apartment. Will I be able to remove this when I move out? How hard is it to remove?

We tested this product in an apartment space and it is extremely easy to remove. Fill a plastic spray bottle with eight ounces, or one cup, of water. Add four ounces of ammonia and one teaspoon of dishwashing liquid. Spray and use the squeegee in the Gila kit or thin blade to scrape off the tint. Wipe away any excess adhesive with windex afterwards.

What is the difference between platinum and non-platinum?

We had the same question when we purchased the item as well! What we found was the level of UV protection and tint color. The platinum would have a higher UV protection and tint level that provides an extra level of heat protection.

Does this reflect too much sunlight back onto other objects? Lawn, neighbors house etc.

For the most part, we did not find and reflection from the Gila film from the outside.

Overall, a great product that is a must have in areas with a high heat during the summer or in an apartment complex. It can be difficult to apply for the first time and we don't recommend applying this product on sliding glass doors unless you have someone to help you. Other than that, we highly recommend picking up this product and giving it a try as it will help you cool your home and save a little bit of electricity from utilizing the AC throughout the day.

I just installed these yesterday, with a helping hand of my girlfriend, and let me start by saying that it's definitely a two people job, unless you've done it before..Like everyone else said, you get better as you go..I followed the directions from Gila's video's, on how to install, and how to make your own solution using a cap full of baby shampoo (yes, they recommend it,it's not something someone made up),and I messed up zero window's..We made only one mistake, and that was cutting one too short, other than that,if you are careful, spray liberal amounts of fluid on both film and the window itself, and use the squeegee just like they show in the video,it's literally a piece of cake to do...We did 13 panes,in under 5 hour's ..I chose to cut them to fit before putting them on,so some edges don't look quite perfect, but nothing too bad. Now,for the efficiency claim,I have a IR Thermometer I purchased to chase gaps around my new house, and low-e claim is spot on..After applying it to one pane,I checked the temp on the one with and one without the film and I was sold..Will try to upload some pic's to show what I'm talking about. .Color me impressed.

Here are my thoughts after having done this in two houses and having paid a pro to do a couple LARGE windows in our old house.

First, there are a few things worth pointing out that make this job a little easier:

1. wear pants with pockets or a loop you can use. I found it easier to keep the bottle of solution with the trigger hanging in my pocket, and therefore always available when I was us in the window vice anything else.
2. keep your fingers moist with solution while handling the film.
3. realize that when the film comes out of the box it is rolled up with the plastic protection TO THE OUTSIDE. Do NOT lay anything heavy on the film side facing up when you unroll it, as the side facing up (i.e. the inside of the curl) is the film and it scratches VERY easily, even with a kink or fingernail (in fact, you should probably remove all jewelry and have short nails for this job, just a thought)
4. you CAN mark on the film with a standard ballpoint pen. No issue to do this if you cut the film larger than the frame as intended (the marks will come off in the refuse).
5. work top to bottom on the windows for both cleaning and applying the film. That way you aren't leaking down on recently applied film if you start on the bottom.
6. don't do this in bright sunlight, it dries the fluid too quickly.
7. don't fight the film. If it's wet and so is the window, it will pretty much stick itself... LET IT.
8. keeping the film wet is tantamount to success. use LOTS of fluid, or when it sticks to itself you'll never get it undone. The fluid is cheap and even cheaper to make.
9. same goes for the squeegee part... keep it wet on the outside, or you'll scratch the film.
10. start in a upper pane typically above your POV so if you mess up in the corner a little bit, it won't matter. a little tear in the corner will NOT keep the film from working.
11. don't stress over little bubbles, you can't get them all out and most of them will disappear in a couple of days
12. don't put tape as far onto the pieces to separate as they show in the picture. It's a bear to get off afterwards, and you only need the smallest corner to separate the two. So try and keep the tape outside of the field and in the part you'll cut off.
13. Watch the videos on their site.

2nd it's good to establish a protocol or pattern to how you do this, so you can get faster and get more consistent results as you go. Here is a quick outline of the one I used:

1st. clean the upper window panel(s) and wipe them down with a lint free cloth or a microfiber towel (no paper towels allowed in this operation AT ALL.. too much dust).
2nd cut the film for the panel, being sure to leave 1/2"-1" overlap all around, especially if you don't have a factory edge
3rd apply the tape to the corner
4th wet the film on the upper side (curl in side)
5th. wet the window
6th using a helper if necessary, wet your fingers, and then start to SLOWLY separate the film from the backer (your helper can help here if needed) and soak it as you go with the fluid using your wet hands to hold the film, hand the sprayer from you pant pocket
7th. hold the film roughly over the window so it covers all the side and then move it slowly closer to the window. The film should at some point 'pull' toward the window like metal to a magnet.
8th. wet the outside of the film again
9th squeegee from the middle to the left and right working you way up the window from the center, then from the center down to the bottom.
10th if you see anything behind the film as you go, keep your fingers wet, peel the film back, remove the material (keeping the film wet). Then rewet the window, place the film back in place, rewet the outside, and then squeegee again.

Then repeat for the lower panel.

Let it stand for about 10 minutes and then come back and check it for major air bubbles, etc. Fix it if you need to, otherwise leave it alone. :)

This stuff works... and no, you can't grow plants that need sunlight behind it very well.
