Beautiful Chisels

Just bought this set based on a favorable Fine Woodworking review and because it seemed to me to be the best trade off between quality and price. The tool steel is beautifully and fully polished and no further honing is needed to get going. My test of whether a chisel is ready to go is that it should be able to shave hairs off your arm. These did. The leather case is also quite nice although it seems like it would be cramped for 12 chisels. I'm looking forward to putting these to good use on some dove tails and will probably add a few larger sized chisels.

June 2009 update - I subsequently bought a set of Two Cherry skew chisels and a 1.25 inch bench chisel. These, while similar in overall quality to the original set, were not as finely honed as the original set. However, they did hone up quickly.

This is my first real set of chisels and thus far I have hammered them into walnut, hard maple, bubinga, cherry, and blood wood with out any issues. I honked and sharpened them out of the box and have only had to strop them to bring the edge back. I can’t say enough about how scary sharp these get and stay. The handles are perfectly suited for delicate work and I highly recommend these for any woodworker. I primary use them for joint cleanup and dovetails.

When it comes to chisels that carry the freight and are not just for show and tell, there is no competition for Two Cherrries chisels. Granted the steel is a little more difficult to sharpen, but they hold their "hone" (pardon the pun)Every chisel that I can use in my shop is Two Cherries.

Nice set of chisels. Had to work a little to get the back flat and they lose their edge a little too quick when working African Wenge. Having said that, they're not too bad.

I have owned the box set for a little over a year (same chisel, minus the tool roll). I would rate it 3.5 stars after careful considerations.
Don't get me wrong, this is very high quality set. From the finish to fit, to its esthetics and proportions, all are indicative of top quality German tools. The edges will hold if you regrind it to >30 degree. I found the factory grind of 25 degree is too shallow for hard steel like this. It will chip on hardwood if you don't increase the bevel angle to >30.
It's true that the back is not "optically" flat. What I mean is that you can still see small ridges in the polished blade. But for someone who's more concerned with their work then the look of the tool, this is absolutely not an issue. I've heard others complained about the flatness, but I bet these are the same people who spend most of the time looking at their tools than using it. I've used it to pare, to dig, to chop mortise. No issues at all. Nada. The back is flat for all practical purposes (meaning used for precision joinery work).
So why 3.5 stars? It's all relative and based on my personal preference. I've compared it against a set of vintage Stanley 750, and the lately reissue of Stanley Sweetheart 750. While there is no discernible difference in the quality of the steel, the balance of the tool feels totally different. The thin and long neck of the two cherry chisels don't feel quite as balanced for most of the tasks. Especially for squaring and cleaning mortise (modern day mortising involves drilling out the wastes, and then squaring with chisels.). It gets tiresome after a while with a tool that's long and top heavy. By contrast the 750 tools (socket chisels) is much more balanced. The handles and the tapered socket feels much more ergonomic. Nowadays, I always reach for the 750 chisels, and am considering selling the two cherries.
On the other hand, for paring, the two cherries' longer blade and thin neck do offer an advantage. You can reach deeper with it. So it really depends on what you want to do with it. Overall I'd rate the Stanley 750 a 4.5, and give this set a 3.5.
