A series of short daily essays on topics of the soul from a Christian viewpoint. Buechner frequently approaches a topic from an unexpected direction and offers new clarity. As with any book of this type, not every essay is going to ring the bell for every reader. But most do it for me.

As an avid fan of Buechner, I couldn't not enjoy this. It is simply a collection of words and characters, elaborated upon to bring more meaning out of them. Some are rather hit and miss. But it's a great way to introduce yourself to this brilliant writer. And you can enlighten yourself with a word a day.

Beyond Words was delightful reading, it provided a fresh review of words, thoughts and Biblical passages. It's a "read between the lines" book which would prove valuable to preachers who might be searching for some bit of humor to "make the point" some dull Sunday morn.

Another good Frederick Buechner book. I liked having the topics of each short meditation arranged alphabetically. You can jump around in your reading; it's not a book you read from beginning to end (although you could, of course).
