Before I say why this is a near ideal casual play flying disc for my dog and me, please note this: It is not a dog competition disc, and doesn't pretend to be. It is not made for extra long competition flights. I rate the Aerobie Squidgie disc 4 stars (really 4 1/2) and the Aerobie Dogobie 5 stars. I have bought them both on Amazon. Here's why they are near perfect for my dog Scout and me:
1. The plastic (or rubber) is firm but soft and pliable, not the hard plastic of competition discs. It's like tough rubber. It's very gentle on the Scout's mouth.
2. The material is incredibly tough. I just got the Squidgie and have played a few times, but it seems basically as durable as the Dogobie which I bought in 2011 and still use. We live in the country, and I just leave the discs in the grass in the front field when we finish, so that's 4 years of Texas weather and sun. My shepherd/collie mix is 45 pounds of energy and enthusiasm, and she loves to pull it and shake it - and I mean really pull and shake hard - with me holding the other end. The ones I bought in 2011 never tore until recently (and they still fly well). Scout likes to chew on them too; with other discs, if I let her do that, they are in pieces in one day. Not these. You know how most hard plastic discs immediately get dog teeth punctures and holes? These do not, ever. (I know, I know, but really.)
3. The both float well in the air, meaning at the end of their flight that stay in the air a while, giving my dog plenty of time to get underneath. The Dogobie, which is a little heavier, seems to fly a bit better and farther. They do not fly super long or precise like competition discs, but 40-60 feet easy, which is fine for most dogs. (Probably farther and straighter if I was more skilled, but neither she nor I care.)
4. The unusual rim design, notched on both sides, is perfect for a dog to catch in the air, or to pick up off the ground. (If you've used standard curve-edge discs, you know what I mean.) It's also perfect if you want to play tug of war - it gives her and me a good grip, and it's flexible enough that she can really twist and yank, and we can both hold on and not destroy the disc, and I'm not afraid of breaking her teeth. I used to swing and lift her off the ground with it when she was younger.
5. It floats on water, so we can play fetch in the pool (she never wants to stop).
6. They are both smaller than standard discs, 8" across for the Squidgie. The Dogobie also claims 8", but I think it's slightly more, or maybe it's just stretched sightly after 4 years of play and weather.
7. They come in various garish colors which makes them kind of ugly, but easy to spot in the tall grass, in the air or in the pool (except the blue one, of course). The Dogobies are in flatter colors, less shiny, which I prefer over the almost dayglow look of the Squidgie colors. But Scout does not care, so why should I?
I am expecting the Squidgie to hold up as well as the Dogobie, but if it only does half as well, it's still a bargain for my uses at any price, and especially at the low price on Amazon, less than $15 for a set of 3. Looks like the Dogobie is now about $7.50 each, but I'd still lean toward that because it seems to fly just a bit better.

Dogobie Sinks Squidgie Floats

I bought the 3 pack Dogobie set and a single Squidgie for comparison. The discs look nearly identical.
My lab Reagan and I took a Dogobie to the dog park. The first Dogobie flew great for the first 4 throws. The flight was a nice pace and distance for Reagan and it was easy to throw. He caught 3 out of 4 in the air and I was thinking great disc. After the 4th throw Reagan ran over to the irrigation ditch with the disc in his mouth to cool off. He came back a few minutes later soaking wet without it. I looked for the disc for 15 minutes and could not find it. I wasn't sure if it floated away in the current, sunk into the mud, or was hiding in the tall grass. I told Reagan to find his toy. He repeatedly stuck his head into the muddy water and came up empty. He never once looked around in the grass but did search with me downstream. Knowing there were two more at home I gave up and we played fetch with his ball instead.
The next day I gave Reagan the second Dogobie at the house. He took it out into the backyard and had it unsupervised for about 3 minutes. When I went out to look the disc was missing a 2 inch triangle chunk out of the edge that he had chewed off. I tried to throw it and it still flew just fine so again we took it to the dog park. Again the disc flew great and was soft and easy to catch. Reagan again took off for the water after 6 or 8 throws to cool off. This time he disappeared over the berm at the pond. Again he came back soaking wet without the disc. After further investigation again I could not find it. This time there was no current and no tall grass. When asked to find his toy Reagan again stuck his head under water but came up empty. This time I was sure it was on the bottom of the pond in the mud although I could not see it. Again we played fetch with his ball instead.
I came home, filled the sink with water, and conducted an experiment with the last Dogobie and the Squidgie. It was confirmed that the Dogobie sinks and the Squidgie floats.
The Amazon descriptions say that both the Dogobie and the Squidgie discs float. The packaging on the Squidgie says that it floats but the packaging on the Dogobie says nothing about water. The Amazon description of the Dogobie is false.
I am assuming that the Dogobie is made to be thicker, heavier, or out of a different material so that it is more durable. This was a waste of time as it did not hold up to any amount of chewing at all at least from Reagan. Both discs fly great. My advice is to buy the Squidgie if you are going to be around any water. Don't leave your dog unsupervised or allow him to chew either disc.
As for us Reagan and I are going back to the Flying Squirrells from Chuckit.
