Coleman Powerhouse Dual-Fuel Lantern
Light up the campsite in any weather with the efficient Coleman Powerhouse Dual Fuel Lantern. Dual Fuel technology gives you the convenience of using Coleman Liquid Fuel or unleaded gasoline. And since one gallon of Coleman Liquid Fuel lasts as long as 4.5 cylinders of propane, you can take less fuel with you to save money and packing space. The 2-mantle design of this lantern creates a steady, bright glow of up to 800 lumens of light that reaches up to 22 meters away. A quick match strike is all you need to get your lantern started, then simply dial in the perfect brightness with the adjustable control knob. Once your lantern is lit, the fuel tank provides a steady base when placed on a table, and the bail handle allows for easy hanging. When you're ready to head home, so is this lantern since it doesn't require any disassembly, which means it's always ready to go with you on your next bright adventure.

I just used this lantern for the first time over the weekend for a 2-day climbing trip. Since we wanted to maximize our climbing time in the daylight hours, we arrived at the campsite with very little sun left. Several camping tasks (e.g. setting up the tent, cooking, etc.) are certainly possible at night, but the Coleman Powerhouse lantern was able to throw light beyond my wildest expectations, making these tasks much more pleasant. The lantern was intimidating when first opening the box, but a quick read of the instructions let me successfully light it without mistakes and within 5 minutes. (Make sure you read the instructions! There are a few things, like priming the mantles, that are not so intuitive.)
If you are debating between this, an LED, or a propane lantern, I was in the same situation. Here are the reasons I went with this product over the battery/propane alternatives:
1.) For high-powered lanterns, white gas seems to be the most cost-effective option. A camper's blog found this lantern to produce light at only 9 cents per hour. Propane lanterns are much more expensive to run, since they require individual pressurized tanks that only run 10-15 hours each. Most LED lanterns are not as bright, and the few that come close in brightness require a large investment in D batteries.
2.) This is definitely a preference, but I much prefer the warm glow of a gas lantern over the cold white lighting that an LED lantern produces.
3.) I am a "buy it for life" type of consumer, and this product seems to fit the bill over the chintzy plastic LED lanterns. Every part of the lantern seems very solidly built (a rare phenomenon these days).
For minimalist backpacking-style camping, a good quality headlamp is the way to go. However, for "car camping," where space and weight are not concerns, this is certainly a purchase well worth the money. The only disadvantage is that you can't take it into the tent with you (carbon monoxide), but a tiny $5 low-power LED lantern will do the trick for a small tent.
Now, when the power goes out, I simply open some windows and big sliding door and use this lantern safely inside. It lights up my whole kitchen and living room at once with enough residual light to bend around the hallway to the bathroom. For the price, I wish it included the plastic case and a bunch more wicks but that's not a criticism of the actual lantern.
By the way, I still don't get how a couple of cotton socks glow brighter than the sun.
